I think they had a pretty good idea before it was finalized: https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...rding-when-colts-knew-andrew-luck-may-retire/
Do you really want a guy on the field who’s not right physically or mentally? Not good for him or the team.

Why do I have to be a mope if I disagree with your position?Apparently the answer for the bulk of these mopes is a resounding yes. That and the obligatory "millenials are garbage blah blah blah blah".
I guess if it were reciprocal with management then I’d agree. I know where I work in the corporate world when they decide they don’t need you anymore, they don’t give me the opportunity to stick around to help the next guy. Unfortunately we live in an everyone for themselves world and things don’t always happen the way we think it should.that is the point, he made the decision for himself.
but he could have stuck around to help with the development of the new guy. and/or told management that his thought process was not right and he was worried about his safety because he was not right mentally and/or physically.

I know what responsibility is.It's just a neanderthal-like position. Sorry if I offended but anyone throwing shade on Andrew Luck better have had a 5+ year NFL career, otherwise you don't know anything about what his mind and body are telling him.
I know what responsibility is.
And I think yours is a weak-minded, self-centered position ... but I did not think it was proper in this forum to share that. Until now:

Isn’t the only team that matters The Bears? Why do we care?So what would Luck’s responsibility to the Colts be a year from now when he still can’t play and the Colts choose to cut him - without notice?
I think a lot of people forget that NFL contracts are not guaranteed only the signing bonus is. And, if the Colts ever were to cut him, they can prorate the bonus over the remaining years of that players contract so as not to take a major cap hit.
Where I still continue to struggle is with anyone who can not grasp that a young man of 29 years old made a life decision. And if you think that this is an isolated case, think again.
It’s happened before - Calvin Johnson, Barry Sanders, and it will happen again. Hard to call this selfish or disrespectful when it’s a life decision .

Newt while I normally agree with you, in this case I don’t in that Barry Sanders did not quit during pre-season. I would also mention that while it is true that NFL players can be cut without notice unless their contract stipulates, but it’s not unusual for many of these guys to hold out because someone else got a better contract, and their ego will not allow them to complete the contract they SIGNED.So what would Luck’s responsibility to the Colts be a year from now when he still can’t play and the Colts choose to cut him - without notice?

I agree about life decisions 100%PR
Not so much about when he did it - I can understand the argument trying to be made, however, it was still his choice and a life choice at that. Sanders and Johnson made life choices too. You see it happening in college now too.
Far be it from me to call out a person for making a decision towards what he believes is the betterment of his life.
Also agree on the hold out thing. Difference is, the guys holding out don’t draw a check or a bonus check. Similar to if they up and quit.
Leveon Bell sat out all last year and the Steelers didn’t pay him a dime. If Gordon or Elliott choose to sit out, they will not get paid, and the teams won’t take the hit for it.
I would say the Colts timing suckedSo what would Luck’s responsibility to the Colts be a year from now when he still can’t play and the Colts choose to cut him - without notice?

If you were the guy paying his salary how was it?
What have you gotten for your investment?
If we agree it’s a business, the business got hosed on this one.
Lol
PRokie
I am a businessman have been my entire career. The difference in the football business is injuries. The NFL owners know the risks when they write the contracts. The players are at risk of serious injury in every game. If I put myself in Lucks shoes with injuries so serious that it forces me to retire from a game I love it has to be bad. I think Luck has been a stand up guy and yes the timing could have been better but maybe he was just making sure it was over for him? Sometimes the company does things not so pleasant like cutting players? Do they still pay them? No if it’s not written in the contract. Maybe just maybe Luck was the smart one here and got a good contract to protect his interest? Sometimes you win and sometimes they win. I am sure the organization can afford it.
Hey man, don’t you know by now that we’re experts in dissecting high school football? We know LOL.How does anyone know what he discussed with management? He may have been talking to the Colts management throughout the entire process before making the final decision. Again I believe Luck to be a standup guy. This wouldn’t surprise me in the least. And yes I am old school but this situation seems like he made the write decision because he wanted to play but just felt he couldn’t any longer.
Gig Yuz a funny guyHey man, don’t you know by now that we’re experts in dissecting high school football? We know LOL.

Nothing, but what's wrong with saying the timing sucked.
Guy retired at a bad time. A ridiculous time in the season. Nothing outlandish about that statement.
I’ve found that every generation thinks the ones after them are garbage.Apparently the answer for the bulk of these mopes is a resounding yes. That and the obligatory "millenials are garbage blah blah blah blah".
I owe you one hug.I’ve witnessed many Millennials to be outstanding go getters.
Baby Boomer, to me, ruined the American Dream.
