Riverheads

Don't sleep on Riverheads dropping back down to 1A this year. Also, Luray drops down as well and they shouldn't be overlooked, maybe not as a top tier team just yet but as one who could cause a little chaos in the playoffs.

My Essex Trojans should be back in the hunt again this year. Losing QB Broaddus, RB Leo Gaskins and SS/WR Sterling Hammond to name a few. BUT...returning most of those big O line and D lineman, a good number of LBs and secondary WR Monroe, WR/RB Martin, another WR that was injured towards the end of the season and the new QB should be Nelson who played at WR last year. He's Broaddus's 1st cousin and was the starting QB on jv until he came to varsity. Plus some jv players that could of been on varsity last year are filling in.

Sussex and Franklin will be back near the top. Rumor is one of W&Ls running backs is going to JM which will hurt their chances of knocking off Essex in the Northern Neck. My top 4 in the east (no order - Essex, Sussex, W&L, Franklin). The tidewater district will be down once again.

Washington & Lee is moving up to AA.

Not sure on how many they will graduate, but Colonial Beach should still be pretty good.

Thanks, forgot about W&L moving up. It's a shame I forgot about Colonial Beach, they get more out of fewer kids than anyone in the state. I also forgot to mention Central Lunenberg. I'm full of mistakes today - I guess seeing Essex and Altavista play for the past 2 years confused me about East & West. I also forgot Riverheads was joining the east. I don't see anyone completely dominating the East as in years past - this could give a lot of hope to many teams. Hit the weight room, 7 on 7, and pre-season practices hard boys, it could be wide open this year.

My new top 6 in the East in alphabetical order (so I don't get crushed by posters - too early for that):

Franklin
Sussex

It's a comedy of errors for me - I mention them and then forget to put them in the top 6. I would take Franklin or Colonial out and put Riverheads in. I think the top teams will be as evenly matched as ever and this year will be more exciting because there won't be a dominant team.

I can see the first round of the playoffs getting really ugly with 60+ to 0 scores with some of the former small 2A schools coming down....

No super teams this year like in seasons past with will make it a very exciting season. Hopefully, some teams will get motivation by this prediction and prove me wrong.

Here are my 1A East seed predictions and title game prediction:

1. Essex (smart scheduling by a great staff pays off)
2. Riverheads (the Gladiators will be a distant 2nd)
3. Central Lunenburg (mobile qb pays off)
4. Altavista (will resemble 2012 team)
5. Colonial Beach (slow start with oline then they tear it up)
6. Charles City (speed kills and the Panthers host)
7. Sussex Central (lack of backs and defense makes it tough)
8. Luray (tough team that will be a problem for someone)
9. Rappahannock (another winning season for the Raiders)
10. Franklin (struggle versus passing teams will hurt them bad)
11. William Campbell (better but not quite there)
12. Northumberland (good start gets them the spot)
13. Lancaster (beats who they need to get in)
14. Surry County (actually a good smashmouth entry for a young team)
15. Windsor (the Dukes will earn a nice trip to the Shenandoah)
16. Middlesex (the Chargers get in with Cumberland unable to)
