Noticed on his stepback on Maleek Thomas there was no hitch, and the jumpshot looked very nice, but when he gets more than 2 seconds to shoot he winds it up

Doesnt make sense to me

I studied him in warm-ups at the SEC tourney last year. Unless he’s changed, I noticed he appeared to shoot the ball from above his left eye. As a right handed shooter, I can’t see why anyone would learn that positioning. It’s a wonder to me that he ever makes anything.

Morenos pull back is also something that I don’t understand. I noticed though that beautiful buzzer beater shot he didn’t have time to pull it back and it was nothing but net. Does this coaching staff even try to help these guys with their shot mechanics?

I’m sure they do, but it’s going to be really hard to change years of muscle memory in just a few months unless the player is working really hard on his own to reinforce those new mechanics.

No the staff does not work on their shot mechanics. Pope said at this point in their career it would be a hard to fix and if they are making shots anyway it could only make them a worse shooter.
It was on his coaches show last season talking about Oweh’s mechanics

It’s certainly an odd looking shot. Got me thinking that other than MKG, I can’t think of a weirder looking jump shot by a UK player. I didn’t like Terrance Jones shot either but it went in quite a bit.

Jones and Moreno both put the ball nearly at the back of their head

All of these flaws are the results of AAU basketball or at least the AAU mentality that dominates basketball in the US. The thought is to dominate your opponent with athleticism and not really care about the fundamentals. Win now and never consider the future when the level of play/athleticism increases and a player won't be able to get by solely on their athleticism.

Although it’s generally hard to fix shot mechanics in college, those supposedly in the know say it’s possible sometimes (Buddy Hield’s being an example). But they also say someone in Moreno’s situation is the best candidate – in comparison to someone like Dioubate or even Oweh (although maybe Anon…8907 saw something with Oweh along the same point I’m getting ready to make). In high school when Moreno was on the move or thrown the ball and had to take a quick 8-12 ft. shot, his shot looked like the one he made to win the LSU game – a fine looking shot in front of his head rather than behind his head. They say when a player has this better shot form in his unconscious arsenal it’s much easier to get the player to the point that it becomes his conscious shot form. If this is correct, then it really would be a shame if someone didn’t push/help Moreno to fix this for both his perimeter and FT form.

Darius Miller used to release it on the way down, and it only got moderately better by his senior year. Tony Delk shot a knuckle ball off his forehead, but was obviously a deadly shooter. Chuck Hayes on the free throw line was tragic as well.

If any of y'all have young players stop that **** NOW. My kids started trying to mimic the funky stuff they see on tv both in baseball and basketball. I squashed that immediately. Old habits die hard ... stop it before they become old bad habits.

I know everyone notices that Mo-D has a super funky hitch as well.

The next time he goes to the line, watch and see how often the other team commits a lane violation due to his hitch. He should really be getting extra attempts on so many of his misses, but it is almost never called.

His “hitch” is almost gone. It’s most of the way there.
