I have only been told that about 100 times myself. It has been a terrible problem for me. Once a pro told me I was built like Jeff Maggert but swung like John Daly. I have tried and tried to shorten my swing, and quit over rotating my hips, but cannot make myself do it. I even took a club to the gym I work out at recently and swung what felt like 50% of how far I could turn, and in reality, looking at myself in the mirror, I was making plenty of turn, getting the club almost to parallel on my back swing.

What drills do you recommend?

Agree with B.B.d.K. thoughts about it. No real drill per say. I just did a ton of mirror work at home. While on the range I got in a habit of watching my backswing and would do countless slow motion reps taking it back and learning to stop as my wrists were near my ear level. The training aid really helped when hitting balls. Not only did my driver and all get better, but my wedge game got a ton better.

Like anything with the swing, you just have to do thousands of reps (good reps) to learn a new movement. My first lesson on shortening my back swing did not even involve hitting any balls. We just did slow motion movements for an hour. I hated it at first, but after some time I began to just incorporate it in my practice and after a few months I started to shorten it naturally.

Go to range hit 8 iron 100 yards, hit 5 iron 150 yards, hit driver 200. You may do different yardages but you get the idea and doing that will hopefully get you some muscle memory built in and hopefully shorten your swing. Make yourself swing shorter with clubs no matter how far they go on the range. I think that could help.

Flipping channels tonight and stopped at The Golf Channel. They were showing John Daly's 91 PGA win on Golfs Greatest Rounds. Been watching for about 30 minutes. Here are a few observations:

1. Golf on TV is immeasurably better now than in 1991. HD, more cameras and the ability to track the ball make it hard to even compare.

2. Improvements in club and ball technology have made us all much better and longer golfers. Players were hitting 3 and 4 irons off the tee into a 200 yard par 3. Can't remember the pro but one of them was hitting 7 iron into the green from 165 yards out. I hit my 7 iron 155 and I'm not a long hitter at all. Sure a lot of you are now longer with a 7 than many pros in 91.

3. John Daly's length was just longer than the field it was LLLLOOOONNNNGGGGEEEERRRR! Crazy how much longer he was than the field.

4. Saw some long gone golf company logos on bags. Spalding, Tommy Armour, etc.

Hard to believe it's been 1/4 century.

Yes, sounds good, that is a good drill for driver tempo as well

Expected...Gold will be cool, but still is an afterthought to a major. Shouldn't even be a sport in the Olympics w/ the current status of the tour.

Would you rather win the PGA Championship or an Olympic gold medal?

PGA 71%
Gold 29%

Loose Lips: "Gold would be cool, but a major is a major."

The Players or a gold medal?

The Players 62%
Gold 38%

Yeah, get rid of golf from the Olympics and not grow the game of golf. Good call, Mark!

Seriously? How many "tours" are there now all over the WORLD? You really think a couple of players from each country in an event that is played every 4 years is going to "grow" the game? Hilarious.

Yes, big time. Countries are going to throw a **** ton of money into the game of golf to get players there to play. Some kids who would have never played before will be exposed to the game and attempt to make it to the Olympics. The exposure for men and women golfers in the Olympic games worldwide will absolutely grow the game.

Another awful take on your part. Just so bad.

I'm not excited about golf in the Olympics. I hope it helps grow the game. But we see the best the world has to offer in numerous events each year between the majors and the WGC events.

I wish they had made it some type of team competition. Even if it was just total strokes for the top two from each team it would be better. Would love some type of alternate shot or best ball match play but realize logistically that would have been difficult.

Golf (in the United States, at least) has a growth problem, with the National Golf Foundation reporting in 2012 a 13 percent drop in the number of golfers over the last five years. Is China the lynchpin of the golf's growth and continued success? Are the Olympics?
The Olympics was the accelerator, but China is not the lynchpin. With the recession, disposable income is eliminated, so you drop your golf course membership, but we'll find that the game of golf will pick up again in the U.S. It's an amenity that people love.

The Chinese cherish the gold medal. They want that gold medallion hanging around their necks, and they will put their resources behind it. If you could actually see this training center in Nanshan, it would blow your mind. The Chinese are doing what America did for itself in the 80s and 90s -- 400 golf courses per year on unlimited budgets. One thing I'm really impressed with about the Chinese is that they put their mind to it and they really go after it. They are so determined to reach their goals. Imagine what it does for the manufacturing of golf balls and equipment and shoes -- everything in the game of golf -- if you could double the number of golfers, it would be great. Everyone wants to see this happen, and if we all band together in the right direction, we could make it work.

^Read what Greg Norman said in bold. Many countries will put big time resources into golf to win the gold because they actually care. UKO is a shitstain on society.

Anybody else find it strange that Ernie Els was the winner of the "who do you want to have your back in a bar fight?" I know Ernie's a big dude but never took him for a scrapper.

You really don't get it. But hey, if you think one 4 day tourney in August with the same players from 2 weeks prior is going to save the game, then so be it. The world will be on the edge of their seats come Sunday, 8/14 at 6:00 a.m. if 3 golfers from Kuwait are in the running for a bronze medal. The human interest stories will be off the charts.

And so the Chinese care about the gold medal...well a big yahoo to that. You know what that means to golf here in the states......ZILCH.

But just in case...so if Jordan wins the gold and Tiger blows him on the beach in Rio, does that give more cred to the game than the PGA champ two weeks prior? Not according to the survey you linked....which you obviously disagree with.

Keep up the fawning and the hyperbole...makes for good entertainment.

Just stop. If you dont think the Olympics will grow the game of golf worldwide you're too stupid to post in here. Dead serious, give it up, this is one of your worst takes ever. Don't dig in, you are wrong.

I may or may not care about the Olympics but its going to grow the game across the world. Your posts are about as bad as your golf game.

Have a tee time for the University Club tomorrow on the Wildcat course, but I would rather play True Blue. I like both courses, but I seem to play better on Blue. I like to play the number 4 tees, but the other 3 guys I'm playing with will want to play from the #3 tees. Granted they are in their 50's and I'm in my mid 40's. Anybody else play in a group regularly where there is a big difference in the tees everybody plays? Maybe I shouldn't play with retirees.

Retirees in their 50s! Damn I'm jealous. Don't worry about the tees. Enjoy the round and the company. Or just play the 4s and let them play the 3s.

Hitting up the Bull tomorrow.

Tom Purtzer must have a terrible short game.

Remember these polls growing up as a kid, and he won "best swing" pretty much every year on the PGA Tour as well

Never played The Bull. Heard plenty of good things about the track though. Just haven't made it out there.

Very good course. New ownership took over last year. Tomorrow will be my first trip down this year. Looking forward to seeing the condition.

I play with guys at times that all play from the senior tees. I just tee off from there with them but use a 3 iron or 5, whatever puts me where their drives usually land. I like that better than having to stop at my tee and then going up and stopping at theirs.

I do that when I am playing with my wife, play from her tees and just hit irons.
