He hates the current Iowa style which in his view is push, never shoot until the last 30 seconds and beg for stall calls. He also thinks Iowa is terrible at scrambling.

Truth, we saw it. Complacency, comfortable and not willing to adapt. Assistant coaches, Dennis as the head of the HWC.
Come on.
Too much loyalty instead of results.
Time to rip off the bandaid. PSU fan here. As much as I would love to see the current coaching staff continue for our sake your coaches style of wrestling sucks. So boring, predictable and pathetic. Always wrestling not to lose. What’s fun about that?

Cale’s approach is hard not to like and fun for the wrestlers. For a long time powerhouse program like Iowa this loss has got to be hard to take and one could argue that it won’t change with the current leadership. Right now you’ve been lapped many times by PSU and are being lapped now by OSU,Nebraska and Michigan. The current set up encourages and rewards actions resulting in takedowns, pins etc. not for stalling, wrist holding, hand fighting or wrestling on one knee for extended periods on end.

Your program is in the danger zone and it’s
Close to becoming irrelevant and if that happens you’re **** out of luck. So if the current administration stays the course … good luck …. Cus you’re gonna need it. Expect many more years of misery.

Ps. I was pleasantly surprised to see your lower weights initiate action. A step in the right direction.

Thoughts on Askren taking over? He'd bring in some quality assistants and would be able to recruit with Taylor and Carl.
Ive said it before and I'll say it again (and I truly don't intend to be dismissive, mean, rude, cruel or morbid), but we'll be very fortunate if Askren is still with us in 10-15 years.
DLT is about as invasive a surgery as there is and is life changing. He was pretty damn healthy going in and that is probably what saved his life.

If he doesn't keep up with that ultra healthy routine or slacks on his daily medication it could be over fast. Furthermore, lots of illness spread in those rooms. It would be unwise to put himself in that environment full time.

In no way do you hire someone under those conditions as a head coach. An advisor, maybe, but not the head of the program.

Fwiw - look at the survival rates of a double lung transplant. It's sobering.

He can yap all he wants on social media, but please let's move onto the next candidate.

you guys were right there in many matches. if youstart embracing the attack/conditioning mentality you have plenty of talent. certainly a top 3 finish. not sure how Brands flips that switch, but its possible. if he cant........need a charismatic, over achiever at a smaller school maybe. think Cignetti at Indiana football. the world is a better place when Iowa is competing for championships.

I want to hate this post but you are 100% correct. Life for Ben will revolve around his wife and children not the 80 hrs. per week head coaching job at a blue blood program.

We’re about to get passed at nationals by VT and two of their biggest point scorers should’ve been Hawks.

He could easily stand the program back up and hand it off to one of his acolytes in 3 to 5 years. His condition is terminal with survival rates exceeding 10 years being very rare. He is a horse and his conditioning is what probably saved his life and I would assume he would rather spend his remaining years building his brand and legacy while being close to family. However, the money would be life changing and could help with the medical bills that were racked up over his ordeal. Honestly, I think Beth will look for someone more stable.

We saw it first hand with PSU football, A horrible loss leading to a snowball effect where the coaches lost the room. Iowa's road doesn't get easier with Nebraska and tOSU in the next 3 weeks where the kids could very easily pack it in. Ugh.

I agree with a lot of this, but you cannot hire a head coach with the assumption of handing the program off in 3-5 years. Regardless of how well thought out the plan is, there would be recruiting fall out.
And 3-5 years is pretty much one recruiting cycle. That ain't enough time for a major turn around barring extreme luck (like Taylor and OSU)

I simply don't think he's a realistic or viable option at the collegiate level.

Give me Dake, like yesterday.

Cunningham, JB, and Dake. Cunningham probably says no but you have to ask. JB and Dake would take the job. Anyone other than that and you are wasting your time.

Edit- I would've included Askren but he is no shape to be a HC at the moment.
You upset now wait until dake takes the team outside and walk around bearfoot to come one with the earth. Then have meditation for an hour. I'll stop there what Dake has been doing. Jesus you guys look at results
If that was the case there is a hell of alot more coaches out there. You want to look at club teams and who identifies with the youth that's fine.

Forget HC the HC is a CEO of a company let's talk assistants there the ones with the individuals and working techniques and skills.

The HC
1. Game plan
2. Donors
3. NIL $
4. Donations
5. Selling tickets
6. Talking to recruits/parents
7. Dealing with media
8. Dealing with administrators

Give me any coach that can do that I want assistants that make the difference.

Joe Maddon and Phil Jackson did similar things and won championships. Like I said, JB is the answer anyway.

The worst part of Brands coaching is our assistants are not very good, someone said it best when they said all our guys wrestle like Bobby and Morningstar... Metcalf not on staff is ridiculous... I also dont care if Iowa fires Brands and hires someone else, or if they keep them... they need to upgrade the assistants and HWC coaching... im just not going on social media to cry about it like you😭

Burroughs would be a grand slam but I doubt it happens. If he wants to coach I'd bet NU would encourage Manning to retire so they wouldn't lose JB to a different program.

Future Nebraska HC already has a waiting line with Dlagnev and Green who are on staff. Primary thoughts of JB being Manning's replacement seem to have dissipated.

JB will likely end up at Rider much sooner than Nebraska. Then there's Princeton, which is also closer to home. Some stint at one of these seems a stepping stone to the B1G big time of Rutgers.

People said similar about Taylor and now he's living in Stillwater Oklahoma wearing cowboy hats. Iowa needs to have a serious conversation with Burroughs asap.

I think this is it. Put M* in the lead recruiting role and get a couple stud assistants that have the freedom to show their technique. The Brands don't know any other way to coach, they are who they are and it has worked well for them for a long time. If they stay, they'd need to be willing to give assistants some freedom to do what they see we need help with, even if it's not how they'd want to do it.....

I have no clue how to post FB link but this statement after the match is spot on...

"Who going to make the walk out to the mound and tell Tom to hand over the baseball because he doesn't have a fastball anymore ? I saw it 10 years ago. The program strategy Cael developed was like the introduction of jet fighters after WW2. It was the future !
The blueprint ? Build the best RTC and stack it with the best in the world, even if you have to recruit outside of your organization...ie: Snyder and Dake along with D.T.. support them and they roll with and coach your guys. That's called a force mùltipier .
Everyone of the coaches on his staff bought in and pushed "the process" over immediate wins or losses. They focused on wrestling positions and techniques, not live 20 minute matches in practice.
The RTC appealed to recruits that wanted a path after college to wrestle internationally. Now they recruit like the Marine Corp does, people line up because they want to be a part of the culture.
Unfortunately, Tom Brands hasn't shown that type of vision. He loves his wrestlers and has high character. But he isn't a CEO who projects out ahead of the curve. He kept asst coaches who aren't at that level and the proof was on full display tonight. The RTC isn't utilized as the asset is should be. Nothing against Dan Dennis or any of the coaches, but really ?
Iowa is closer to being the 10 th best program then the best ! Iowa has a base to build from as good or better then any other college program. The blue print is there and obvious ! Just look at what Taylor has already done at OK St in 2 years. They will challenge PSU in the next 2 to 3 years."

The more assistance and different styles (of course at the elite level) the better... even learning some things from brands, mixed in with a Nolf style, or other styles whatever they may be, that the wrestlers can stack their bag of tricks with, is beneficial... right now it is literally watching Bob and Ryan through better athletes
