at this point. Either that's he's telling the truth or that he's 100% idiot. To be knowingly doing steroids right after pointing your finger at Congress while denying any usage and also after you had already accumulated HOF numbers makes absolutely no logical sense. I still think most people would believe him if the only question was the one test. His problem is that he had already essentially been implicated by Canseco's book and putting the 2 things together makes it very difficult to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I wouldn'tput **** inmy body and not have a clue what it is, especially when it is from a foreign country. then add in the fact that I know I may be drug tested for substances that are illegal for me to have in my system based on the job I currently have, and I am certain that I wouldn't take something unless I knew what it was. add on top that the fact that I just testified in front of the entire damn country that I don't take illegal substances to help me perform better at my job, and there is no doubt whatsoever that I wouldn't take something unless I was sure of what that substance was.

Palmeiro was on of those guys who suffered from a lack of fame, and, despite his numbers, that seriously would have cost him Hall of fame votes.
He only had 4 All-Star appearances, and only 1 as a starter (DH). Only twice was he even in the top 10 in MVP votes, and he was never even the best player on his own team. Without the steroid scandal, I think his stats would have eventually gotten him in, but I really don't think it would have been on the first ballot. Now he is out for sure.

just killed him and nobody gave him the benefit of the doubt. I don't know how it will ever get straigtened out but I hope somehow it will. His body did change over the years butnothing along the lines of Bonds or several other roid poster boys. Hell, my body has changed quite a bit over the yearsI am now 215 and left college at 165 and I did it all with only the help of Budweiser. I know, TMI.

Only (2) of (15) didn't make it in via first ballot (Harmon Killebrew and Eddie Mathews). Bonds, Griffey Jr., Sosa, A-Rod, McGwire, Thome, Palmeiro, Manny, Frank Thomas, and Sheffield not included in total count.
Regarding the 3000 hit club:
(5) of (19) didn't make it in first ballot:
Tris Speaker - inducted in 1937, wasn't included in first HOF class, due to limit of 5 per year
Cap Anson - played in the 1800's, voted in in 1939 by vet's committee
Eddie Collins - didn't make first ballot
Nap LaJoie - same as Speaker, voted in in 1937, not included in first class
Paul Waner - didn't make first ballot
Biggio not included in the count.
So technically, if you remove Tris Speaker and Nap LaJoie from that list, only (3) of (19) didn't make first ballot. Then, if you look at Cap Anson, who played in the 1800s and was brought along in the first few years of the HOF, when there was a glut of inductees because they were catching up with the time, you could really say there were only (2) of (19) who didn't make it.

So I guess what I'm trying to say, is that there is less than 10% chance that a player with either 500 HR or 3000 hits doesn't get in the HOF on the first ballot. So far, everyone who's met BOTH criteria have gotten in on the first ballot (Mays, Aaron, Murray).
I understand that there's a chance he wouldn't get in first ballot, but something tells me the historical significance of his career numbers would outweigh the "star-power" factor that he lacked. He was THE model of consistency in the 90's.
Obviously, this is all hypothetical because he probably won't get it in at all...
Regarding the 500 HR club:
Only (2) of (15) didn't make it in via first ballot (Harmon Killebrew and Eddie Mathews). Bonds, Griffey Jr., Sosa, A-Rod, McGwire, Thome, Palmeiro, Manny, Frank Thomas, and Sheffield not included in total count.
Regarding the 3000 hit club:
(5) of (19) didn't make it in first ballot:
Tris Speaker - inducted in 1937, wasn't included in first HOF class, due to limit of 5 per year
Cap Anson - played in the 1800's, voted in in 1939 by vet's committee
Eddie Collins - didn't make first ballot
Nap LaJoie - same as Speaker, voted in in 1937, not included in first class
Paul Waner - didn't make first ballot
Biggio not included in the count.
So technically, if you remove Tris Speaker and Nap LaJoie from that list, only (3) of (19) didn't make first ballot. Then, if you look at Cap Anson, who played in the 1800s and was brought along in the first few years of the HOF, when there was a glut of inductees because they were catching up with the time, you could really say there were only (2) of (19) who didn't make it.

So I guess what I'm trying to say, is that there is less than 10% chance that a player with either 500 HR or 3000 hits doesn't get in the HOF on the first ballot. So far, everyone who's met BOTH criteria have gotten in on the first ballot (Mays, Aaron, Murray).
I understand that there's a chance he wouldn't get in first ballot, but something tells me the historical significance of his career numbers would outweigh the "star-power" factor that he lacked. He was THE model of consistency in the 90's.
Obviously, this is all hypothetical because he probably won't get it in at all...

The Hall of Fame is not entirely driven by stats - there is a huge subjectivity in the voting, and that's where Palmeiro took a big hit. When his name comes up, most people do not automatically think "Hall of Famer". It is only when you look at his stats that you conclude he should be a shoe-in. Before his scandal came out, there were people debating whether he would even get in the Hall of Fame, and the mere existence of that debate means he was unlikely first ballot entrant.
By contrast, look at, say, John Smoltz and Chipper Jones. Those guys have Hall of Fame numbers, barely, but they are seen as the anchors of the best regular season team of the 1990's. Chipper will get in on the first ballot, and Smoltz is very likely to as well.

actually you can have it both ways. for example, OJ Simpson was found not guilty of murder but also lost a civil suit for around $30 million for wrongful death of the people he was not proven to have killed.
just because they couldn't prove Palmeiro was lying doesn't mean he wasn't actually lying.
Canseco has said himself that he injected Palmeiro with steroids. And you can hate Canseco all you want, but everything he has said happened, has always ended up being true

I remember reading about a minor leaguer who took it after a nasty leg break that just wouldn't come back to even 60% strength of the other leg after months of rehab, and recovered all that strength nearly immediately after taking stanozolol. failed a steroid test, came clean, but still kept failing tests over a year later. MLB acknowledged that the results were consistent with the lingering presence of the drug in his system, but by the written rule was forced to consider it a 2nd, and then 3rd, violation.

type thing. No professional athlete in his right mind would take something like that unless they were trying to gain an advantage. Bottom line is that it will cost Raffy the HOF. Voters will never vote him in now.
On a side note, baseball players NEVER handle this sort of things very well from a PR standpoint. If you knew you had a positive test coming out, you should do something about it. Call a press conference, tell them it's coming, tell them how you dont know what you took that caused you to test positive, tell them this is why the current testing situation is unfair.

PED users (both proven and accused) over the coals for the stats they ring/rang up (partially) due to the PEDs. Yet, we rarely speak ill of the players who underachieved due to the drugs/alcohol/etc. they ingested.
