But true embarrassing story. I grew up in Owensboro. The idea of paying to park was totally foreign to me until I moved away for college. In 2003 I drove to St Louis to see Radiohead. My bank account was overdrawn but I had a Citgo credit card. I was a dumb 20 year old college student. Sorry. I wouldn't do that now. But I did.

No cash. Negative balance in my bank account.

I got there fairly early and decided to go see the Arch. Parked my car and walked around the park and through the free public areas. Time for the show and decided it was time to head to the amphitheater.

Got in the car and tried to leave the parking garage. Oh crap it costs $10. I had no money. None. Maybe a few pennies in my cupholder. I decided to start asking strangers for money. No one is giving me a dime. Damn I'm just a broke kid trying to get home. Finally an elderly couple gives me the $10. I was super thankful. I asked for their address because I wanted to pay them back. They were like "yeah........ No just the take the money, we're good" I was so confused. I just wanted to pay them back...

Years later I started getting people walking up to me at gas stations saying "OMG I just need a few bucks to get to Versailles" and it dawned one me! "OH CRAP THEY THOUGHT I WAS GONNA ROB THEM!"

I might be the one honest panhandler ever....

My boss wouldn't let me have the next day off, so I tried to drive from St. Louis to Lexington after the concert. Ended up overdosing on NoDoze and becoming violently ill on I-64 in Louisville. Rough 2 days but yeah Radiohead was incredible.

For some it is 100% a profession. A guy at work lived in DC and said that the same lady was outside his building every day panhandling.

He said he would give her money from time to time, and one day he asked how much she made doing this. She told him she averaged $100 per day. Said it was more than minimum wage so she had no incentive to get a job.

The guy told me one day her teenage kids were sitting with her outside the building playing on their iPhones. They all lived together in an apartment. Granted, they were hovering around the poverty line, but they weren't homeless and hungry by any means.

I was in Florida on business and they did a documentary. Some of these cats did not go on camera but said they all made 6 figures most years. One guy said he made 150,000 and quit his 9-5 job and got his wife to quit her, hell they live in condo and drive miles away so neighbors don't notice them when they come in. Crazy

I do feel bad when they have the dog out in hot sun with tongue out or child.
Most say do not give to them and only hurting. Florida has signs saying don't patronize and give.
A family in our neighborhood is out every week, wife, kids and dad. Sign says out of work. There are 3 big subdivisions in development begging for workers in same neighborhood so hard to give when others are doing the work.

I had a guy come up to me years ago in a convenience store parking lot in Nashville. He asked me for a dollar. I said "Why do you need a dollar?" He said "I need to get.... hell, I ain't gonna lie, I need a drink." I laughed and gave him 2 bucks for being honest.

That’s one of those stories that’s just so crazy it’s gotta be true lol

That reminds me. The summer that my wife and I got married, we drove out to Montana. On way home we were driving like crazy to get back to Louisville. We were planning on staying in St. Louis. We were broke, so my wife said that we should drive the rest of the 4 hours. I said no problem, I’ll take some No Doze and drink a Surge Soda. I thought one No Doze is good, but 2 would be better! Wrong, I was so jittery that I could not keep my foot on the gas pedal and pink elephants were jumping out in front of me on the interstate causing me to slam on my brakes at random times. My wife had to drive the last 3-1/2 hours and she was freaked out by my psycho behavior.

I had to go to Wal-Mart the other day to pick up some meds for the lass and as I was walking through the parking lot this young kid comes walikng past me, with stuff in a walmart bag, and asks a lady behind me if she can spare a few dollars. She audibly laughed out loud and said something along the lines of " you had money when you walked in there, I'm not giving you money now"

How about some drive-bys to take out some panhandlers. I think that would be a strong disincentive. Hell, why not declare panhandler hunting season? Imagine that trophy kill on the wall.

is completely out of control.

I might as well be standing at a busy intersection.

Thoughts?
It’s stupid and the Lexington Liberals that run this City should all be arrested. Every effin street corner has some loser begging for money. It’s a terrible look for Lexington.

There are homeless shelters, food kitchens, and tons of Government, (Our tax dollars) help for these people.

There is zero excuse for standing on a street corner begging for money. Zero.

Wake up you idiot Liberals that run Lexington and realize how it makes this great city look like a ********.
It’s EFFIN EMBARRASSING.

Saw a guy on corner of new Circle and Nicholasville rd last week. His sign said the usual “ need money”, “god bless”. As I pulled past him I looked back and other side of sign was a “now hiring” sign. Guess he had stolen/borrowed it from a local business that had it staked in the ground .

A ton of irony there.

I know I'm going to shatter some people's pollyanna view of the world, but there are panhandlers who prey on people's emotions and generosity. You aren't a good samaritan. You are a victim.

Exactly. Lexington's homeless problem is all due to the liberal government there.

Because Republican run cities have no homelessness problems whatsoever..

If the hustle is good, I’ll give a beggar two or three bucks. I work at a hospital and we get sob stories every day.

Best pitch I have ever heard went like this:

This black lady was outside the hospital. She looked like she graduated summa *** laude from the School of Hard Knocks.

Her: Sir, do they have pancakes here?

Me: Yes, breakfast is served until 10. (it was just after 9)

Pause...just as I began to walk away:

Her: Will you give me some money for pancakes?

Gotta admit, that was the first time I ever got asked for pancake money! I gave her a five spot for being original.

I gave a man and woman $20 in OKC for gas and they ask for my address as well. Did not give it to them, just told them it was a gift. Most of the time I give and $20.00 is my norm. Almost always give to the Salvation Army, they do good work.

Had a couple walk in to McDonalds a few years back when my daughter was about 8 and they looked around scoping out potential easy givers. They passed everyone else and came over to me and my daughter and ask for $20.00 dollars to buy lunch. I told them no but, if you are hungry, I will go to the counter and you can order what you want, and I will pay for it. They agreed and ate lunch with me and my daughter.

walmart is getting bad. Every time I go in there someone is pushing around a cart with a few items of food in it, then ask you if you can help pay for it. They smell of smoke. I asked one woman where she got the money to buy her cigarettes, she walked off.
