Gene Chizik is stepping down as DC at North Carolina. Papuchis, who has been the linebackers coach, is named the new DC.

I wish him well. I always liked him and thought he could have been a good defensive coordinator here had Bo let him do his job.
Mike Ekeler and Terry Joseph are both there with him. Maybe they want to try and Bo and Carl to get the gang back together...joking of course but it is kinda weird they are all there together

The overwhelming opinion I remember of him around here is that he was a worthless yes man, under qualified for the position, and a whipping boy for Bo when things didn't go well. I guess we'll find out.

Pap is a hard worker. That's a big part right there. He learned from Bo who does actually know defense. If Pap takes what he's learned from Bo and Chizik, and applies his own spin on it, he should be fine. NC area has some fine athletes, and if he has some of those on defense, it will make him look good as it would for most coordinators.

It's easier to live close for their group therapy sessions that they go through post Bo.
There must be a Stockholm Syndrome specialist in Chapel Hill.

I always liked Pap, he was enthusiastic and hope he does well. I wonder if he still puts white tape around his fingers?

The best half of football I saw Pelini's defense play I think EVER was that game where Bo got taken to the hospital at half time and Papuchis got to call the defense.......just saying maybe not having a raving lunatic screaming at you constantly helps job performance.

For as nutty as Bo was and is, for only being a head coach for a few years, he has a decent coaching tree going. A number of his guys are now coordinators and who know what the future holds.

Riley has had a ton of years at the helm. What is his coaching tree like? I seriously have no idea.

Coaching trees don't mean much I think as a barometer for gauging the quality of a head coach. Tom Osborne produced very little by way of a coaching tree. His assistants tended to stick around. Warren Powers became a head coach as well as Gill. But neither was/is wildly successful. And Powers may have been a Devaney hire. Not sure

Agreed. Hayden Fry has one of the most impressive coaching trees around. But I would much rather have TO, who doesn't have a very impressive tree.

You are probably right. I just find it interesting that a coach with as many problems as Bo ended up with some of his assistants doing OK moving forward. Now, they all could flame out in the next couple years...so who knows what will be the end result.

I'm not sure that there is a single guy that you could say is Bo's product. Maybe Pooch but I would weight his time under Chizik more heavily than his time under Bo. After all he was working for Chizik when he got promoted. Other than that, exactly who could we say was really part of Bo's "tree"? Carl maybe? The DB coaches that rotated in came and went pretty quickly. Warren was a good hire but he had been a DC and a DB coach a long time before he worked for Bo. Kazcynski? Ross Els? NONE of the offensive coaches would I consider part of his tree.

You would rate his time as a position coach for two years with Chizek over his seven years (part of that as DC) with Bo? Really?

Yes Tom. Chizek is a better defensive mind than Bo and we both know that Papuchis was DC in title only at NU. I will note that Bo hasn't even got a sniff of a major job since he was canned at NU.

Cmon guys......stop with this Pelini hate BS.

There hasn't been a better defensive team in the country since2009. That wasn't named Alabama.

And Suh didn't do sht until Bo got here. So save that BS excuse too...damn I wish we would win something so we can quit looking like clowns just to trash Pelini.

And what about his defenses after 2009?

Have you lost your mind? Seriously. He INHERITED Suh, Crick etal and couldn't win a conference championship with them. So Suh got better as a junior and senior. Like that has never happened before regardless of who the coach was. You give Bo credit for that and yet we had multiple guys that looked like crap under Bo go on to pretty good NFL careers after leaving NU. Wisconsin just scored again.

No...I don't ignore the facts because I hate a coach...hell...why go to college then...apparently the were NFL ready out of high school.

Funny, those same guys credit Pelini for their success. I'm sure you know more about their own lives than they do.

Ohio state and Iowa never punted......so our current coach sucks balls and he hasn't accomplished half of what Pelini has his entire collegiate career according to your standards.

But we are suppose to believe in the below average results he has put on the field and in recruiting...ok...seems legit.

He is nice even though he fired his friend in a cowardice way. We can't even beat freaking Iowa.

I don't hate him. Sometimes things don't work out with somebody be it a coworker, marriage, coach, etc. and most fair-minded people move on as long as everybody is reasonable. I understand continuing to bag on Bo is childish, and I am guilty. However, the fact the guy hates me (Nebraska fan), my school and its administration, and probably my home state makes moving on more difficult than it could have been if he would have moved on with his $$$ we gave him. You didn't see the same kind of thing here directed at Solich or Callahan.

I find Bo to be crass and offensive in his language and many of his behaviors. But do we have to disparage everything about him...even make up stuff that obviously isn't true.

Mrs Tom, why don't you put your husband online? Troll. The guy was a raving lunatic and while he supposedly knows lots of intricate defensive philosophy, he failed miserably mutliple times in prime time. We got similar results from Banker (without all the inherited talent that Bo had) and he only got 2 years before he was sent packing.

Baloney. Your opinion and you've always been a Pelini apologist.

You really went for if there. How about you take a look at Chizik's defense vs Baylor(who seriously didn't have a QB) in the bowl game last year. It was the most unsound thing I've ever seen. There was seriously no force player on numerous plays. Now assuming you actually know what a force player is, you might know that Pelinis defenses put the force player in run/pass conflict quite a bit, which killed him at times. That game from UNC, that was Chizik's defense the last 2 years in a nutshell, is/was so much worse than Pelini ever put out there, including both Wisconsin debacles, it's not even funny.

And Pelini was a garbage HC. Questioning some current things going on, which I clearly have done, does not make one a Pelini apologist. You embarrassed yourself there. Don't be so obtuse.
