True, But Apparently they made some big changes that made it worse and kids are blowing up social media with it. Talking to mine, it was a mess compared to previous years. Something about varying fees, getting kicked out of the site, and limited location I don't know.....she got hers
In my day there was plenty of parking in the dorm lots, and it was free. Couldn't drive to class, but no real need to. Pretty easy walk when you're 18-22.
What I was told was they sold 1 permit per space this year whereas last year it was 6 permits per. That’s a huge reduction. Seems foolhardy. (Edit: 6 is way too many!)
But they’ve been working toward making central campus pedestrian only for 20 years. Just one step closer. Hopefully the shuttle system is better than it was in the 00’s.

How much are parking tickets now? Back in the day when they were around $20 several of us would all pile in a car or truck and chip in $5 to the driver. He'd go park in faculty parking and then pay the ticket with the donations collected.
Yep….my son is a senior and lives off campus. Logged on before 8:00 on the designated day and was # 6400+ in the queue. He was not able to get a reserved spot in any lot on campus. He is on the waitlist for 3 different lots and the parking folks told him that spots will open up once classes actually start. Total BS

+ if you decide to ride your bike to class now, you have to pay a $10 permit fee for your bike. Who's going to monitor that? Parking is a problem on every campus, some are going to get screwed and have to adapt.
How do you learn coping skills if you never have to cope with anything until you are an adult? Then life punches you in the face. Parents should be training their kids for a fight but they are insulating them from the real world, and killing their chances at surviving mostly intact.
I'm currently working at my 3rd institution of higher learning. Mississippi State was my second stop. Every student in America complains about parking. It doesn't matter where they attend or how great the parking services office is. It's low hanging fruit and easy to complain about. Don't worry, Student Government and/or campus newspaper will get involved and "they will get things changed".......

When I was there in the late 80s, I lived in Evans dorm for 2 years. Undergrads who were on scholarship had to stay in the dorm then. The parking lot had less than half as many slots as there were students in the dorm. So people had to park in the grass beside and behind it. They gave tickets every day. At the end of the semester they said that I had to pay for about a 100 tickets. My uncle who was a lawyer called them and explained basic math to them. 15 minutes later I got a call saying that my tickets were voided.
I don't think that's what this is about. They still have central campus parking, which costs more than other parking. They're saying they cut the number of passes they're selling for the same spots as last year and it's created a mess for a lot of kids. Kind of hard to push kids off a campus without an outstanding shuttle system, which we don't have.
Every college has parking issues, but going from 6:1 to 1:1 on passes is absurd. 4 or 5 is usually sufficient. We don't have the shuttle system capability to handle 1:1 parking.
This is a cluster and goes back to we have people in places that do not know what they are doing. The President of the university should never deal with parking passes, but I suspect its at the top of his list this morning. This will get fixed before classes start, but this was just stupid.

Okay now that is money-grubbing horseshit. I never did it but damn.
Hmmm, I thought we had shuttles. Regardless, from my time as a student in the dark ages, I wanted adequate parking near my first class that allowed me to sleep as long as possible, then swoop in before class, park and walk right in. I was always pissed about parking but now that I'm season, I realize that we don't have any way to provide the number of places that would be necessary for that.
I think that a massive parking garage would be a good idea for commuters during the week and athletic events on weekends/after hours. If MSU has truly pushed people off to parking that is too far to reasonably walk to campus and not provided bus service, then that is an issue. I suspect that the biggest issue is that available parking is not close enough to sleep as long as students would like and still walk to campus, just like it was in my day, but admittedly, I'm past the age of having a student there to really know.
ETA TLDR: my primary issue when I was at state was not enough open parking to accommodate my unwillingness to get my @SS out of bed in time to get to class

During my time as a student (2019-2023) We didn't have a parking issue, we had a convenient parking issue. There were plenty of people moaning and complaining about parking because they showed up at 11:50 for a 12:00 class and the closest parking lot was always full. During that time, every single commuter zone had additional lots that were practically empty because students didn't want to walk a little further to class

As the father of a recent college freshman, I think Mississippi State administration gives them plenty of chances to learn to cope. I have never had a less consistent customer service experience than freshman orientation, housing, enrollment, etc.
The ONLY time I ever received a parking ticket was when I was a student at Mississippi State. I think it was when I first got there in 1994. I found it was one of the few benefits of having 8 o'clock classes every term.
EOT - the only solution I can see is large parking garages with shuttles across campus. Of course, you have to get people to agree to do that.
Staff is pretty P.O.'d about the changes too. In the past they could park in any staff lot but now they are tied to a single lot just like the students. If they feel the need to go to a meeting across campus they have to pay double the cost of their single lot pass to park in any Staff lot

I used the one by Lloyd Ricks that ran along the old railroad track bed right behind Montgomery Hall, but, mostly I rode a bike to all of my classes and never had a parking issue.
How involved were you in your kid's registration, etc.? When I think about how that’s changed over the generations it’s kind of incredible. My FIL hitchhiked to State carrying his bag. I loaded up my truck and moved myself in, handled all my registration, housing applications, etc. I moved my kids in but had nothing to do with their registration, housing applications, etc. I did help them understand and apply for financial aid. I know parents today who are a mess doing literally everything for the kid, and texting them incessantly because they noticed they were somewhere they shouldn’t be or not somewhere they should be because they track them by the minute on Life360…”don’t you have algebra right now?”
ETA: this is not a judgement on how it should/shouldn't be. I find it interesting how much it has changed and I'm thankful i was not inclined to worry myself to death about what mine were doing in college. I knew I had already sunk any chance of a low risk experience via my DNA...

Meh - it's only $10 and the racks to lock the bikes up aren't free. I rode my bike from South Nash to campus daily back in the day, and I would have paid $10 (even back then) and not complained if it meant more locations to lock it up...
I am involved, but only for the things that will ensure that he is technically enrolled for the first day of class so there's no technical problem that sidelines him for a semester. He's on his own for the rest.
Over the last 4 years, I've laid out all of the major options/career paths that I think he might be interested in, talked with him about rush and the Greek system, offered to introduce him to the alumni that I know might be helpful to him, and he knows that he has a resource in his dad. But, I'm not initiating anything.
We'll see how it goes. Wish him (and us) luck!

I'm not breaking any news here or anything, but it is amazing how humble raising a kid made me.
I've not been afraid of much in my adult life, but there are rarely more than a few days that go by that I'm not worrying over how my kids will do as they become young adults. And trying to balance help/support with restraint is one of the most difficult things I think a person can experience.
I want them to be happy, and that's all. I hope I've given them what they need to find that sooner than later.

This was my experience in the late 90s/early 2000s. There were always plenty of spaces as long as you were willing to walk a bit.
Same thing happened to mine. He is a little farther from campus this year. The tram or trolley or whatever it is runs by his street, so he may be thumbing it until more spaces open up. It's part of being in college and part of learning how to overcome and adapt was my 2 cents.
