We knew this tone was coming.
We knew this tone was coming.
So William Winter says it was we, MSU, who kept our basketball team from participating in the NCAA tournament. Question for historians: What political office did William Winter hold in 1963??
I realize its hard to believe that there are dozens of things that makes MS better than Colorado. And at the top of the list, we raise kids better than y'all do.
I largely agree with your point, because there were many Southern states that have horrible racial past. However, Mississippi does bring a lot of this on itself. The state flag still has the Confederate 'Stars and Bars' on it, and the University of Mississippi's entire existence is tied to a pre Civil War, Old South mentality. They can try to run from it by changing their mascot to a bear and banning Confederate flags from the stadium, but they will never leave it behind. They can't. It's part of them and always will be. The band still plays "Dixie", the students still shout "the South will rise again" and the nickname of the university comes from what slaves called the master's wife. You can't help but look at the University of Mississippi and think of segregation and Old South mentality. It's a part of them, and since they are the university in the state most people think of when they think of Mississippi, it's what is broadcast to the nation.

First of all, he is from Colorado, so I assume he is a pro-dope liberal, the anti-Mississippi man. Second of all, he is a 50 year old man writing a column for 60+ year old readers.
Yes, Pat, the MS you grew up knowing is very different than the MS of today. I realize its hard to believe that there are dozens of things that makes MS better than Colorado. And at the top of the list, we raise kids better than y'all do. And ESPN kicked you out to go work at Yahoo basically because you are who you are, so there's that.
I agree with all this. For all the publicity Ole Miss received for segregation, USM was worse. Infinitely worse. Most people my age don't know that, and aside from the part where no one gives a **** about USM, a big part of why is they've never flown the Old South card.I largely agree with your point, because there were many Southern states that have horrible racial past. You'd think William Winter would know that it wasn't MSU keeping it's basketball team from playing in the NCAA tournament, but the state government. We had to defy the governor to finally play. Or maybe he does know and just says that so Ole Miss doesn't look like the only school with horrible racial history.
