This is surprising. He reportedly had passion for the game, his kids SEEMED to play hard, and he stood up and yelled a lot.

All traits of a great coach.

Ray has 13 wins right now. Knight had 6 wins total in the last TWO seasons. You are making a ridiculous point that will fall on deaf ears.

BTW.... two can play this game. Calipari also has the same traits you point out. Keep Ray forever!!11!!1!1!

Not a big fan of Cal either, if that was your point.

The point that I was trying to make that flew right over your head was how people are grasping at straws right now concerning Ray.

BTW, I'm about to go see your beloved Wheatshockers play.

I'm certainly not impressed with the players he's brought in so far. To be fair, I wasn't impressed with the Croom or Mullen hires.

The point of this thread is that anybody that thinks that Ray has things going in the right direction, is grasping at straws at this point. It's been suggested that I should be impressed by how hard the players play and by how hard Ray coaches them.

I'll be impressed when he has good players playing well.

I think most reasonable MSU basketball fans other than the most ardent members of the Stansbury Supporters Club are of the belief that the program was headed in a bad direction from about 2007 until Stansbury's resignation in 2012. The records were pretty good but as has been noted many times, it was against weak OOC opponents and an ever-weakening SEC. Ray certainly doesn't have the wins under his belt to justify a 100% vote of confidence at this point, but there is at least a noticeable difference in effort and attitude. That's a start. As is often the case with message boards, people twist a statement into something else. In this case, and I am not singling you out blue, that's been done by posters here insinuating that people must be happy with losing because A) at least Stansbury is gone, and/or B) we are "hustling." Obviously what he's doing has to translate into wins at some point in the future for him to continue as head coach.

You'll be impressed when he has good players playing well. I'm patiently (sort of) waiting on the "has good players" part.

Too many people make basketball much more complicated than it is - that there is some type of mystical X and O formula that can be used to win - despite the talent level. But it really is as simple as getting good players and then getting them to play well - whether it's in college or the NBA. It's a simple concept, but very hard to do. K is probably the best at that. What does he do from an X and O perspective that is so innovative? If it came down to strategy, wouldn't everybody be doing it? They all can break down film and figure out matchups. But the good ones have a knack for getting the most out of the roster.

Stansbury's downfall was that he became intoxicated with Sidney's talent. But not only was he not able to get anything out of it, he wasn't able to realize that he would never be able to get anything out of it. The most baffling thing to me is, he was the last to know. I bet if he gets back in it, he won't mark that mistake again.

As for Ray, I'm no different than anyone else in that I hoped Stricklin found that elusive diamond in the rough. I don't like to see anybody get fired. But so far he's brought in a bunch of projects who appear to have low ceilings. And as someone posted yesterday, most of them struggle with the basics.

I don't think anyone can honestly say they've been happy with Ray's recruiting looking strictly at who he's brought in thus far. But can you honestly say he should be doing better at this point? We're a decent program at best in a weak conference that's currently in the dumpster, and it's the job of a previously unknown, first-time, new to the region head coach to convince players to jump in and help him pull it out. There was absolutely no way he was going to recruit well enough right out of the gate to put a quality product on the floor in the first few years. Ray will have decent enough pieces the next two years to finish with an even or better conference record if he's as good of a coach as a lot of us seem to think. If he can just get a little momentum going, the recruiting will pick up.

You should be a fan, Cal wins. Ppl are not grasping for straws, most realize RR will get at least 3 years to get this thing headed in the right direction. So if they mention he has some passion or he has the team hustling, its just where we are right now. A starting point.

As others have said, we should be better next year with what we have coming in. Hopefully the recruiting will build from there. But if the team does not get any better next year from a win/loss stand point, Ray will have a tough time holding onto his job. And I'm fine with that.
