don't react to some peta nuts with hyperbolic statements like "time to change pellet gun laws!!" this country can't get anywhere because we get into these arguments where one side views killing a snake outside your house to being the equivalent of shooting your neighbors dog or cat, and the other side responds like the first side wants to take away their BB guns (even though said in sarcasm, the point your point is readily apparent). doesn't matter whether we are talking welfare, healthcare, social security, foreign relations, gun laws, whatever, people can't have a sane conversation without unreasonably extrapolating the other's position to set up strawmen.

I wish I knew how to post a damn picture on this board with my iPhone. I've got a water moccasin that we killed while fishing that's over 5 feet long. The world record is just over 6 feet.

The best part is the girl who says she doesn't use mouse traps because they are inhumane. Well, mice aren't humans, so.....

Patrick Willis is man, that's all I got to say...he killed a GARTER SNAKE. Speaking of, I was struck by a southern Pacific rattlesnake on the heel of my puncture proof boot in north L.A. county about 6 years ago. Never rattled at all.

Had a moccasin hit my tennis shoe when I was six, never saw a mocassin I liked after that day, unfortunately before I took herpetology in college I didn't know the difference between them and banded water snakes.

If I`m out in the woods and I see a harmless snake I don`t bother it. If the snake is hanging around my house I got a problem with it no matter what kind it is.

Most people don't. In the deep south, there are about 3 species of semi-aquatic snakes that are constantly mistaken for Cottonmouths. I try to tell people with snake problems that many different species have triangular shaped heads, but aren't venomous. Cottonmouths (water moccasins) are easily distinguishable, flat head, like any pit viper, with eyes on the side, not on the top. Cottonmouths also have a dark band located on each side of the face.

I'm

in the woods alot during the summer and its crazy how stealthy/quiet those things are. You can have one right on you and not even know it, until it's too late.

There's this crazy professor here at MSU who moved here from Canada who told us a story about how he's had this one rat snake living under his house for like 2 years and he refuses to touch it because it keeps the cats and rats away.

There is only one kind of snake, the copper headed water rattler

**** a snake. Act like they're all deadly and you'll never make a mistake, that's my theory.

anything that cruises on land without arms or legs just ain't right.

I get that but, my neighbor had a big speckled king in her back yard, I REFUSE to kill a king no matter what. I grabbed it and let it go in the wetlands behind my backyard. If you have a big king around chances are that's the only snake around.

That's smart of him...
Generally speaking, snakes have no interest in interacting with humans in any way and they keep the rodent population down

I have had pet snakes since I was 10. I even had a Boa Constrictor in MacArthur hall in the day. The cleaning crew killed it by shutting off the heat light while I was on a road trip. I currently have a Ball Python.

With that said, I understand how people have fear of them and do things like Patrick did. It is almost like anti-gun folks are about guns. They think if they are just in the same room with one they are going to die. People who are that scared have no interest in trying too make a proper identification. It would be nice if they would because unless it is a spitting cobra, you are safe at a distance.

Had a 5 foot chicken snake in my bluebird house. I got it out and was guiding it to the woods, when my neighbor came running with a hoe and killed it. The snake was very docile and never tried to strike or bite. I am still upset about him killing that snake. I killed a 5' rat snake a couple of years ago, only because it struck at me, and I had a 2yr old running around in the yard. I found 2 speckled king snakes out at the lake several years ago. Both were between 3-4'. They were so docile, they let me pick them up, something I had never done with a wild snake. However, I will kill any poisonous snake on site, other than a garter snake. Some people don't know they have fangs and are poisonous, but not like a moccasin or rattler.

I had a 5'+ black snake coiled on my black floor mat in my carport years ago when my boys were under five or so. I don't think it was poisonous . . . I do know that it was dead the moment I saw where it was. Didn't really matter about how docile or harmless it was.

He also has two elementary aged children. Just never heard someone like that before. I find it humorous.

I can honestly say that I have been bitten by a CopperHead on the foot. I was barefoot in yard....worst pain I have ever felt. You first have the initial pain of needles stabbing you. Next it feels like your foot is in a fire and it keeps getting hotter and hotter. Does this for several days. All this goes on while it swells up bad and skin starts changing colors. I went to the hospital but they didn't do anything for me. Nothing they really could do. I limped around for a year and it has since then compromised my immune system.

This was sent to me last week. I don't know who, where or when this was taken but he has a State shirt on. Anyone have any info?

This reminds me of a Jerry Clower story....

He was talking about a rattlesnake round-up he attended and he asked his host who this one gentleman was. His host replied that the man was from the humane society and he was there to see that the snakes were killed right. An incredulous jerry wanted to know how in the world one could kill a rattlesnake WRONG!

Actually this is true, very mild, very limited. And apparently it is chewed into is prey not injected much like a Gila Monster. No word if that makes technically elapidae instead of a colubrid.
