Did Russell simply get many more reps than Relf, or is there a chance that Russell is turning a corner and picking up steam?

Are you telling me it is possible for a quarterback to throw for over 250 yards? In a single game?

It has only happened four times in the last six years at MSU. Tyson Lee has three of them. Think about that.

i will be telling my grandkids about the times when MSU sucked so badly and I will give them stats like this that they won't believe.

/unfortunately Croom's offspring or the second coming of LT will have taken hold by then and the conversation won't be necessary

Don't get too excited. Remember the scrimmage was 2 60 minute sessions and our offense was on the field for every snap.

most of Russell's snaps are against the 2nd defense- but he does get a few with the 1st bunch...and I'm sure he is getting better, he has got to continue to get experience

Hate seeing the 2 picks from Relf- but not surprised by the 150 yards...that should be about his norm

Most likely reasons for the big difference:

1. Relf has more run plays in his playbook therefore if they got equal snaps then Russell would have had more passes (and in turn more yards)
2. Relf had more plays against the 1s than Russell did.
3. Maybe the coaches felt Relf needed more work on the short game and Russell needed more on the deep game.
4. It only takes a WR breaking a 70 yard TD to skew the numbers.

I am sure Russell is getting better but the amount of information contained in the biscuit is not enough to make any definitive conclusion on who is doing better or getting better.

I can somewhat stomach an interception here or there, but the fumble on the QB/RB exchange, a la Lee/Dixon in GA Tech and Houston games,makes me want to put a bullet hole through my TV.

Just to add to this, 7dust on BDJ said Relf and Russell could not move the ball at all on the first team so they put Favre in and the O scored in 4 plays. Back in goes Relf and Russell and once again, they cant do anything on the 1st team defense. Enter Favre again and 5 plays later, TD.

we will see Favre on the field THIS year. If I were Mullen, id use him with reckless abandon. Screw a redshirt.

If he's good enough and ready enough to play this year, he will play. If not, he'll redshirt. No coach is going to redshirt a player who's ready to play.

and this is nothing new, that the kid does indeed have the "IT" factor QB needs. That's the difference in a short Tyson Lee and a short Farvuh. Hell, is Drew Brees even 6'0?

Maybe something is finally going right for us and the evil spirits under Scott Field have been neutralized

He was as impressive as any HS QB I've ever seen. And it's not just my MSU wool speaking here. At the time he wasn't committed to us and it didn't really look like we'd offer him a scholarship. I just thought he'd make somebody a hell of a QB and I just hoped us not offering him a scholarship wasn't going to come back to bite us in the ***.</p>

Unfortunately he won a couple games for us. Croom noticed he had IT, and promptly coached him down as he did all of his quarterbacks. OK Croom is gone now, but...

....haven't you all seen this movie before? The savior at Em State is always the QB in waiting. I look forward to seeing TRLF get his chance, but I'm not holding my breath.

You don't redshirt someone just because they are a true freshman and have some older guys in front who are semi-capable. Ifhe can helpus win in any way, gethim on the field. If Favre plays the game with the type of attitude we saw from the text message he sent Mullen after the LSU game, I want him on the field.And if Russell or Relf get injured at some point,Favre will definitely see some playing time.

he was some great QB, I kept trying to tell you he sucked. For all the credit he got for the Bama win, he was 7 for freaking 21 with a pick-6.

And I don't think anybody ever saw an IT factor in Sly Crxxm.

Dan is a smart man and will make the decision that is best for the future of MSU and his career.

that he looked good at times and a little shaky at times. Not as bad of a runner as I'd heard, but not as good of a passer yet either. I immediately knew that if he saw the field for us as a true freshman we were in trouble. I thought then, and still think now, that he can be a good QB for us.

Wes Carroll, his consistency, his playmaking with his arm and legs,and his lack of turnovers were a big part of that 2007 season. He's also full of **** about the pick 6. Carroll got intercepted, but he's thinking of Henig the preceding year. Hell that was like his first effing INT that whole year.

If Henig had been the QB all year we would have been 3-9 again.

**** 2008 would have been alot different as well if it hadn't been for 1, thegun wielding incident, andB. Croom being an idiot, insisting on playing Lee and also completely playing AWAY from Carroll and the teams strengths. But that's what he did best, 17 **** up.

Carroll was just lucky to play behind Ellis' D. He wasnt a good QB by any means and in most games, he was asked to throw safe passes (dump offs to the RB or a short curl route). 80% of our scholarship QB's over the past 10 years could have made those passes. The next season when we couldnt hide behind the D and Carroll had to make plays for us, it became painfully obvious that he wasnt that good. Unfortunately for us, tyson Lee wasnt either. Carroll did what was askied of him in '07 and it helped to win games but I wouldnt ever say he had the "IT" factor, the ability to go out and LEAD us to a victory. Ellis Johnson and the D led us to victories in '07 and Carroll just happened to be the QB. He played an important part in that season by not committing TO's but I hate to say this but the only good thing Woody did correctly as an OC was caklling only safe plays for Carroll. where he had only 1 or 2 options, 10 yards and in.

That is extremely concerning to me. The yards are not important if we have turnovers and no TD's. Unless, we had TD's and just not mentioned in update.

I just happen to disagree with it a little. I happen to subscribe to the theory of "whatever offensive skill player Croom touches, regresses". And it could be that by him being in the game, and the offense moving the ball, he seemed alot better in contrast with previous Croom coached QBs/offensive players.

Admittedly, I'm one who doesn't think stats tell the story. Carroll, to me, seemed like a confident QB in '07. He didn't have all the skills in the world, but did make some plays.

He's the backup at Florida International behind a QB who was their backup last year.

He left State because he was Lee's back up (literally hours before a very successful coaching hire) to go be a back up at FIU???
