OXFORD - The University of Mississippi may charge fees for tailgating spaces in its fabled Grove next year.

Dr. Andy Mullins, executive assistant to the chancellor, said that is one remedy being considered to end a space-grabbing competition that has become a headache for administrators and police.

Despite a stated Grove opening of 6 p.m. Fridays before home games, fans and tent set-up companies had begun claiming spaces along the "Walk of Champions" as early as 7 a.m. Friday before home games, creating disruptions to the workday.

"Above all, this is about protecting our academic Fridays," Mullins said.

The university's Gameday Committee will consider the proposal and make a recommendation to the Executive Council.

it would only take a few weeks of doing that to get the message out. if they can keep you from setting up your tent by putting up a small rope you would think they could also keep you from setting up on the sidewalk while waiting to get into the grove.

i always figured that these tent set-up companies would become a problem for universities

...we dont charge and your tent can go up starting at 5pm first come first serve ......however in the Grove they plan to charge for reserved spaces.... but its really all about the academia at $%%$? Hmmmm. I guess if they Rebs will pay then let them. We had a Reb at our Egg Bowl tailgate (and she brought champagne) and her thought was MSU's tailgating blew away the hallowed Grove. Her comment wa that we actually had good food and it was not all about the alchohol.

what is better to you?

1. Delicious slow cooked (over a bed of coals and apple wood chips) pork loin that is stuffed with cream cheese, chopped jalapeno peppers, and sliced garlic cloves, then lightly seasoned with a blend of homegrown herbs, wrapped in maple infused thick cut bacon, and finally rubbed down with a generous portion of brown sugar....with typical American beer and some flasks of Jim Beam

OR.....

2. Abners Chicken fingers with Abner's sauce poured into a very nice bowl....with Crown Royal Special Reserve, Fat Tire, NB 1554, Grey Goose on the rocks, and expensive champagne

I go with number one every single time.

minus the champagne and the Abners, what's wrong with mixing the two?

I mean there's really no reason to wash down your mouthwatering pork loin with bud light, when perfectly good beer exists on the market.

to the post above about the OM girl being surprised that people at State tailgates do this rather than having the best alcohol possible.

i'm with you on the good beer. i partake as much as i can afford. when it comes to tailgating though, my last thought is what kind of beer or liquor i am going to be bringing.

just say, "the set up time is ___, all items set up prior to ____, or judged to be interfering with the day-to-day operations of the university become property of the University of Mississippi."
Then have the cops/grounds crew get paid by the pound of stuff they collect (or, I hear there are people in Starkville that can take down a tent faster than you can blink).
Or are there too many lawyers in the ranks for this to fly?

Semi-unattended cooler during the game with a bottle of whiskey in it that I've poisoned and pissed in. Maybe strategically place razor blades on a tent. Then they'll either be waiting in the hospital or I can just follow a trail of blood.

The food sounds good, but I do love me some Crown Royal Special Reserve. I like Abners too. This is a tough choice.
