Payton Verhulst is one of nine student-athletes named to the 2021 USA U 19 World Cup squad. The Louisville WBB signee is one of four ACC players on the roster.

Five players will compete for the final three spots on the roster, and practice with the team, which will be finalized before the squad departs for Debreccen, Hungary and FIBA World Cup action from Aug 7-19.

What a great honor for the 6'1" Bishop Miege, H.S. (Kansas City, KS) graduate !

In 2019, Verhulst claimed MVP honors after leading the USA U16 National Team to gold and was joined on the 2019 FIBA Americas U16 Championship All-Star Five by 2021 squad members Betts and Citron. Also aiding the U.S. to gold at that event was Kamari DeBerry, who is listed as one of the five competing for the final three spots.

Reigning FIBA U19 World Cup gold medalist, USA women’s teams have won eight gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal while compiling an 86-13 overall record in U19 World Cup play since the event was launched in 1985. Even more impressive, the USA has posted a 62-3 record and won seven of the past eight U19 golds since 2005.

The USA Junior National Team Selection Committee includes Temple University head coach Tonya Cardoza, 2008 Olympic gold medalist and Duke University head coach Kara Lawson; and North Carolina State University head coach Wes Moore. Jen Rizzotti is tthe chairman of the selection committee and Cori Close (UCLA) will be the head coach.

I watched the games last year and this age group of girls is super talented and for Payton to make the team again is a huge accomplishment. It seems every year our main competition is Australia and that should be expected because half of the Australian team is always on college rosters in the USA.
