That's called competing for a recruit by a fellow Mississippi school. People have been saying that to Penn State recruits for the better part of 20 years now. You're reaching on the "obsession" thing on this point.

this ain't damn Genespage. It's recruiting. I would expect Ole Miss to try and get some of our stellar recruits. The boat is getting full in Starkville.

Anyone who compares Nutt to Orgeron doesn't deserve acknowledgment.

Obviously a bad year, but rational people have no desire to fire Nutt. Tyrone Nix, on the other hand....

Ole Miss fans were saying that Mullen was just another Orgeron. Except for the fact that Orgeron never was 7-2 during a season and Mullen will NEVER go 0-8. Croom never accomplished that.

in yancy's "tidbits", he said a WR that iscommittedto another school contacted OM Monday to see if they were still interested. He will release his name at the right time.

But the only comparison I ever heard anywhere close to Orgeron was, that they were both guys without HC experience, and that he could end up being as terrible as Orgeron. Even though, being as bad as Orgeron is scientifically impossible.

Morrow's family called OM "to see if we're still interested."

I know MSU never really pushed for Montcrief because we wanted Morrow. Looks like the OM staff is starting to come around.

OM isn't obsessed, they're desperate. Remember all those post and Yancy made saying things like "MSU is hard after Singleton because he's their only big prospect left." Well, now that we have the top player in the state committed, we have Singleton all but committed, and we have 10 commits in the MS/AL All Star game compared to OM's 2, it shows just how <17> clueless Yancy really is.

1) I thought Brassell wasn't even a top 5 player in MS, according to Steve Robertson? At least that's how he had him listed several times. Now he's the top player? Interesting.

2) I concede that there is a very, very good chance that Singleton will sign with MSU. In comparison to the OPs point, don't you think that the MSU coaches were selling to him that he could be different than just any other MC player and come to state? That he could make a name for himself as a bigtime MC player to go to MSU and "start a pipeline" of MC recruits to MSU? In recruiting, coaches will say nearly anything to get a kid to sign in February.

3) I wouldn't be so confident about Brassell. It will go to NSD. And yes, I realize that he is committed to State right now.

I am sure if Brassell signs with OM - he will be sure to link back to the post above. If he signs with State, Lion won't be speak a word.

we talkin The Kang vs Dog Brewer type levels again....

Funny how no fans of other schools tell us what "a good man and father figure" Dan Mullen is to our guys like they did all the time with Crooms.
Funny how they dont tell us "get behind him because he will get it turned around" like they did with Crooms- all they say now is that he is leaving to go coach somewhere else...

We are finally out of the Dark Ages

in the first rankings the Spirit bunch making a big to do about either Singleton or Brassell in either Steve's ranking or something he said on his site. I don't care enough to try and find it and I don't pay for Steve's stuff, so maybe I am wrong.

The rankings I'm talking about are from wayyyyy back, sometime right after their JR seasons. But like I said, I could be wrong.

I think that recruits see more stability at MSU right now than at OM. Even with "Mullen is gone after this year" nonsense.

If I'm looking at OM or MSU right now here's what I see. I have to think that there will be some staff turnover at OM after this year. The OM D is terrible, will Nix leave? What about some other assistant coaches? Who is going to be the future QB at OM? By all accounts Stanley is out, so where to then? "Oh, we have this stud 5'11 JUCO QB that we're redshirting.." Say that outloud, and tell me how that would sound if you were Brassell or Singleton.

I agree Brassell will come down to NSD, but they also told the CL they (Brassell and Market) weren't going to take any visits. I can't see why Brassell would committ to MSU, and go through crap he's been through if he wasn't absolutely sure MSU is where he wanted to be.

I just thought the term "it's just competing for a recruit" like it was no big deal was hilarious. Heck, I'm glad they want our players.

To be honest with, I can't recall us doing that where it was made public on a message board chat room. I might be wrong about that, though.

I won't sit here and say that we don't do it either- Dan is the king of T S U N after all, but I don't recall anyone for either MSU or Ole Miss making that known publicly that we're saying negative things about Nutt not being there. Again, I could be wrong.

I will say that I think MSU's focus ever since Dan got here was more about the positive things about MSU and selling that and selling making MSU Mississippi's football team and getting the very best players more than anything rather than "Nutt won't be there".

You're absolutely right, you don't have to resort to "that coach won't be around next year" smack when your team is doing well. But to say that doesn't happen all the time is silly.

When you lose to Jacksonville State AND Vanderbilt, you go with what ammo you have. And even you have to admit, it's at the very least, a reasonable possibility that Mullen won't be in Starkville next year.

I just said that I'm not aware of our coaches using Nutt leaving as a means of negative recruiting. That doesn't mean that we don't use it. I just haven't seen it publicly acknowledged that I can recall.

I don't deny that it happens all over the country though.

And as far as Dan, no I don't think he will leave after this year. I think it's more likely that he will get a big raise from us, and then start looking after that if he wants to leave. That's what Tuberville did. He got Ole Miss to a bowl in 1997 and everyone was talking about what a miracle worker he was, and then he got a pay raise from Ole Miss after that, and then started looking for a job.

I got the impression you were ridiculing the tactic.

I think Mullen will be there for at least another year. But his success is definitely getting attention around the nation. Our two schools don't generally have a reputation for hanging on to young up and coming coaches.

any kind of pipeline to MSU. Maybe that was a big deal to Doug Buckles back in the day, I don't know.

It has more to do with the fact that:

1. Joe Price is one of Tobias's best friends and he is going to MSU.

2. Percy Harvin is Tobias's favorite player and Dan coached Percy Harvin.

3. Nick Brassell and Tobias are also friends, and that doesn't hurt either on both of them.

4. MSU's QB situation for the near future is a lot more stable and WR is a BIG need for MSU, hence early playing time. There is no doubt that State will throw the ball more whenever Tyler takes over. Even if Tyler Russell becomes a huge bust, both Dylan Favre and Dak Prescott are going to throw the ball more than Relf is now.

and if he leaves, he leaves. That's part of the business. I won't act like UT fans did when Lane Kiffen left if he does.

I just hope that MSU finds someone that's as good or better when that day comes.

That prick deserves his own category.

Mullen is a good coach. Much better than Ole Miss fans were hoping for. But even if he does leave (and I'm not sure he will), it would be hard to compare him to Lane Kiffin.

It was a bitter pill to swallow when Tubs left for Auburn. But they doubled his salary. The only bitterness came from his comments before it happened, at least for me. But I got over it quickly, and wish him well.

when he has players...he has players at USC and his offense is a freaking machine. I literally expect them to score a TD every time they get the ball. If not for some bad redzone decisions by their QB, they would've scored 50 on Oregon and that game goes down to the wire.
Plus he can recruit and USC is USC, minus a few scholarships.
