I said it's probably 60/40 pitching/defense for the reasons we've lost games this year. Patdog said it's 10-1, pitching. Here is a breakdown of each of our losses, which came to 64% on the pitching, 36% on the defense. There were a couple of games where neither were to fault, i.e. - coaching or not scoring any runs.

SELA - pitching - 2 walks, HBP in the 9th sealed the game for SELA
SELA - defense - 5 errors
SELA - N/A - lost 6-5, had plenty of offensive opportunities and couldn't get it done
OU - pitching - blowout loss
UCLA - defense - 2 errors broke open the game for the Bruins
A&MCC - defense - 3 errors led to 6-1 lead
Florida - pitching - only gave up 7 runs though, so with a little offense, who knows - I'll pin this one on pitching however
Florida - N/A - lost 4-5
Florida - N/A - lost 1-4
UGA - pitching - gave up 9 walks
OM - defense - 4 errors
USC - pitching - Graveman had 3 walks, 2 hits in the 1st inning - ballgame over after 1 inning
USC -pitching - 8 walks
Arkansas - pitching - 1-1 game into the 6th inning though
Arkansas - defense - 4 errors, Stratton gave up 1 earned run thru 6 innings
Arkansas - pitching - 20 hits, had 3 errors though
UT - pitching - gave up 5 homeruns
Bama - pitching - 8 runs, all earned
Bama - N/A - I pin this one on Cohen for leaving Stratton in way too long. Girodo came in and retired everyone he faced - it was too late at that point
Bama - pitching - only gave up 6 runs, but I'll still pin this one on the pitching
OM - defense - 3 errors in the 8th inning when the game was tied
OM - defense - Jet Butler meltdown
OM - pitching - 15 hits, 19 runs
JSU - defense - 2 unearned runs, lost 3-1
USM - pitching - 14 runs
Auburn - pitching - 6 runs in the 1st innning
Auburn - N/A - combination of pitching & defense. Had a 9 run lead, AU came back, but we had a double play ball to get out of the inning, didn't turn it, they scored 3 more runs
Auburn - pitching - 11 runs
Vandy - defense - Sam Frost error killed a 5-0 lead
Vandy - pitching - had the game in the bag until the 9th inning, complete meltdown after
Vandy - pitching - 14 runs
LSU - defense - 3 errors in the 3rd led to 6 unearned runs
LSU - pitching - Devin Jones sucks pretty damn bad

So, add em up. That's 18 games for the pitchers, 10 for the defense. A ratio of 64% to 36%. I would have to say my estimation of 60/40 is a little closer than the 10-1 patdog said earlier. Guess I was right afterall.

if the pitching was better, we would strike more people out or at the very least, fool more hitters into weak swings and easier plays defensively. And then there are times when the defense just lets you down- but how many times have we had the stones or the experience to bear down and make some good pitches after an error or two?

Better pitching will always make for a better defense. And you are not going to win in SEC football or baseball playing alot of "Freshmans"

Would having "all-SEC" infielders help? Sure they would- but as hard as people hit the ball against us, we would still give up a shitload of runs. Give the man time to get some more players on campus and climb out of the hole Polk and Raffo left us in.

I just posted how all of our losses played out and the main reason we lost each game. It came to 64/36, pitching. As it's been stated over and over, they both suck, but our ****** defense has had more of a hand in our losses than some want to give it credit for. It's certainly not 10-1 like pat said.

This is how these games actually played out. Our defense cost us 10 games this year. There is nothing to assume. What happened, happened.

the pitching than anything. If you find something you think I cherry picked, I'll revisit that game.

...is the fact that we lost the vandy game by 5 runs. Frost's error led to 4 runs if Whitney gets none of the blame for not sacking up and getting out of the inning.

We may not have won that game, but Whitney was cruising up until that error and it killed what momentum had just gained the inning before. That is why I put that one on the defense.

Just because the D made errors doesn't excuse our pitching staff getting shelled all year. I agree with Coach, it's 75/25. The overwhelming problem with this team is pitching, it's not even close to being 60/40 or whatever.

Our staff ERA in SEC games was well over 9 this year. That's over 1 earned run per inning before we even start talking about the D. That's beyond terrible.

with me in pretty much every thread I post for whatever reason. Kind of weird and a little creepy actually. You're like the anti fishwater to coach34 threads. Keep working on that sixpack cred.

None of the other 9 games are really debatable and there's a couple of games I blamed on pitching when in actuality, we just got beat and couldn't get that clutch hit. So that kind of evens out.
