Play that State was on the good side of a ref screw job

We have the other side where State (or another team you're a fan of) got screwed over by a bad call, so let's flip it around and come up with instances where we benefited big time from a bad call. Yeah, I know it's rare that we are on the good side of a bad call, but it does happen from time to time.

A lot of Arkansas fans think we missed the fg to beat them in '98. I was there, but couldn't tell

There is some question as to whether or not Rod Gibson actually scored to give us our only win over LSU in the last century.

We fumbled the ball in the last play of the 1980 Alabama game. Don't know who jumped on it.

That's why they got a penality.
Their guy slapped the ball out of our centers hands.

O did they? Did not know that. I've always watched that play and thought that the refs just could not see who really recovered it, and our bench had already cleared onto the field, so they just called the game over.

I don't think there's any question.

Rod Gibson did not score on that play. Not that I'm complaining. But it evened out the very next year when their player fumbled at the 1-yard line through the back of the end zone and the ref called it a TD.

I actually thought Rod did score there. The wide hole open up and he stumbled and fell just on the goal line. I was in the student section and had a really good angle.

Gibson did not score. It was sweet justice for the year before.

I'm in the minority that believes that he didn't score on that play, but actually did on the play before (3rd down).

Or was it James Otis Doss?. Anyway Bama illegally slapped the snap. we did it against Auburn got the ball back and beat them .

He did score on the play and it's proven by the fact that two three hundred pound lineman are lying on his back after the play. He could not have scooted forward under there. Only state fans could apologize for that win. The lsu fumble forced by pig outa the back of the end zone is undebateable. We won that damn game but state fans never defend it.

I think the ball was out of bounds on us on the trip that led to cam burns 2 free throws against ole miss in 91(?). Called out on Ole miss and Smoke tied the game with no time on the clock or virtually no time on the clock.

Yes, the point is that we won both games. Lsu fumbled at the three yard line out of the back of the end zone in baton rouge and we scored legitimately I Starkville.

He scored on that play stop apologizing for winning. I hate you people for apologizing for winning. We deserve to win and should win.

No penalty. Fortunately Donald Ray King recovered and time ran out.

If Bama had recovered they would have put time back on the clock and given Bama another shot.

You have to look long and hard to find the refs giving us a gift.

I read somewhere (I believe it was Rick Cleveland's great article about that game in the Ledger about 5 or so years ago) that one of our linemen said he saw the ref on the sideline throw a flag on that play. But when we recovered the fumble and the clock ran out, the flag became pointless so the ref picked it up.

I was there too, and I couldn't tell for sure either. It's really hard to see a FG from the stands. Of course, I thought it was good but it was really hard to tell. And the Arkansas fans couldn't tell either. I'm not sure if we had the Sony Jumbotron in the north endzone then or not. Seems like it was installed in '99. But even if it was there it was so small you couldn't tell there either.

Bama nose tackle slapped the ball away from Kent Hull...penalty was called, but Donald Ray King recovered anyway. I covered the game but never knew about the penalty until 25 years later when I did the story. Neither did John Bond.

Wouldn't they have to re-snap if it was actually a penalty? If the ball is sitting on the ground in the centers hands, and the nose tackle slaps it backwards, wouldn't that actually be a dead ball foul?

If it's a dead ball the fumble would have never happened anyway..... right?

We did NOT fumble the ball against Bama in 1980

We fumbled the ball in the last play of the 1980 Alabama game. Don't know who jumped on it.

the nose guard knocked the ball out of Hull's hand before the snap; line judges saw it and the game was over; huge pile up that ensued shows no refs; they had walked off the field;

Hull talked about it many times before he died...

true story..trust me

I asked Hazelewood about it not too long ago when I saw him at a golf course. He said it was definitely good, inside the left upright.

There was a play in the 2006 FB game in Tuscaloosa where Javier Arenas broke away for what probably would've been a punt return TD but they ruled him down before he advanced too far. It was close, but I don't think his knee was down.

I don't remember if that would've tied it or just made it a closer game, but that would've definitely given Bama a lot of momentum. Because as exciting as the first half of that game was, the second half was HORRIBLE for both teams. But I'm assuming we were just playing keep away to hold onto the lead.
