I think I’m going to throw up in my mouth if I have to read this or hear this too many more times. And this applies not just to Lebby / MSU, but to every P4 program. This is simply no longer a thing.
First off, if players are playing hard, I’m certainly not giving Lebby or any coach credit for that. Not anymore. I’m giving our boosters credit, if anything. Everyone on the field is making a 90th-99th percentile mid-career family income in the United States, when you add up the value of all the benefits they are getting. And they are doing that as 18-22 year olds, playing a kid’s game.
Therefore, “playing their hearts out” is no longer something to be celebrated in FBS football….it’s the bare minimum expectation for all involved. Players who don’t should be fired immediately. Coaches that see players not giving effort or playing without discipline and continue playing them should also be fired, immediately.
That’s probably the most stark reality we all must face about what we used to love about college football - guys playing hard for their coach and school and nothing more - being dead and gone forever. But it is, in fact, reality.
Nobody watches the Panthers lose close to the Chiefs and says “boy, they really played their hearts out.”
