Playing Vanilla

It was a debate 2 years ago during the 8-0 run that we were playing vanilla, and then it just seemed that maybe we weren't that good.

Won't make a difference in the outcome, but not what you want to hear coming out of players' mouths. There will be real defenders trying to knock your dick in the dirt, and real craziness if the unthinkable happens in the first 3 games. **** will get real, and quick.

By "gets real" I'm sure he just means "gets more difficult"--which is reality. I don't think it's a sign Lewis isn't taking the nonconference seriously.

I want them out there having fun, playing loose, and scoring at will. A little razzle dazzle gets the team and the fans excited. I hope they don't keep it plain vanilla. Hopefully its at least vanilla bean.

Do we really save trick packages for the big boys?

I'd almost argue the opposite. I think most of our gadget plays occur against the Troys and UABs of the world. We play pretty close to the vest against the big boys. I could be wrong on this, but that's how I remember it.

As to Lewis, what do we want him to do? Say that Southern Miss is just as tough as Alabama or LSU? He's not an idiot. I hate it when players get criticized for saying things like that. Is it really bulletin board material to say USM isn't the best team on our schedule? Good grief, they won one game last year. Every team, including Saban's, know what kind of team is on the other sideline. Every team to some extent or another plays down to that competition. It's human nature and unavoidable.

Also: the whole we're playing vanilla was one of the biggest jokes on this board. The main proponents aren't here any more, but that was just wooly wishful thinking.
