Is there a limit? I know most teams bring some kids up but I just saw one varsity team brought up 26 kids, some being Freshmen.
I think it's a good thing thing for the underclassmen to gel with their future teammates and a few extra practices loosens them up for next year. Not to mention, it boosts their confidence.
Good luck to your perspective teams.

Why would there be a limit? You're right it's a great thing for those kids to be a part of it.

Unless there's a blowout situation none of these kids see the field so why would there be a limit?

Teams will bring up players that can work solely as scout team players to give a team a good idea of what they are going against. Also if you have a fast kid that you think can do something at DB or as a returner.

Unlike other sports that have a roster limit during playoffs, football does not. They only limit they have is how many ribbons with medallions they will receive at the state final.

Which is nice in that I don't have to count players like I do in baseball.

Bringing up SOME frosh and most SOPH is invaluable in building a program from my experience. It looks a little rediculous on the sidelines but it is worthwhile.

There was a time that the IHSA did limit the amount of kids that could suit up. In some cases, players (at schools with large rosters) who practiced and played all year had to be told they weren't on the playoff roster. It was a total travesty for the players and the coaches that had to deliver the message.
I believe some time in the mid-80's, the rule was thankfully revoked.
