I was looking at the IHSA site's playoff hopefuls list and I noticed that Lisle and Coal City are both listed as the conference champions. Lisle would be a clincher at 6-0 but CC only has 5 wins so far. Why are they listed as conference champions when that championship does not guarantee them a playoff spot? My main gripe with the I8 splitting again this year was that the two 5 team conferences did not guarantee the champion a playoff spot. In theory CC could have won their division and not qualfied for the playoffs. Or what if the Small was not as clear cut with Lisle winning 6 games already and Wilmo, Petone, Lisle, Herscher all beat up on each other and each only earned 5 wins?

Or better yet the winner of the Small went undefeated in conference play then lost to every large side team with a record of 4-5. But by golly they were conference champs!

It only matters if one of the teams has 4 or 5 wins. Otherwise who cares.
