that name is being thrown around on message boards and seems to have some momentum. Not a good fit and I hate his style. Absolutely hate it.

You'd be upset about getting the guy who is everything we wished Stansbury was?

You ever watch Pitt play under him? 65 points is considered high scoring for Howland. And think Bob Huggins at Cincy on defense back when you could maul offensive players. Those days are over.

I seem to remember a rather scathing article about his later years at UCLA although I don't remember the details.

I want a talent collector. A guy who can get things done in AAU, identify players, and land them.

True. Anyone with 5 losing seasons in the past 20 years is not a good fit for MSU BB.

Howland's last year at UCLA they avg 74.4 ppg. Quit with the ********. He's one hell of a good coach! 3 ******* final fours and a NC appearance. Have we ever played for the NC in basketball before? 17 no we haven't! Please let us be fortunate enough to land Howland. He's a grand slam hire.

Howland switched to an up-tempo scheme his last year at UCLA. He had said he's not going back.

"Howland did not survive his battle against vocal critics, including former UCLA star center Bill Walton, who screamed about his micro-management on the bench, his reluctance to recruit the Southern California area, the epidemic of transfers and Howland’s personal decision not to play a more entertaining, up-tempo style. "

If true not a great hire. Has to be better candidates out there like Chris Mack at Xavier or Greg Marshall at Wichita State. Not saying they would even consider leaving but those are the young type coaches we should be looking at. Howland has been out of coaching for a few years and if considered that good how come still sitting at home. Hell if that good and if he's that interested why hasn't bama snatched him up already. IMO we have to do much better this time around and can afford to do so.

We have a better chance of running the table in baseball than getting Marshall. Why would Mack leave Xavier for here? I think xavier is a better job

Ben Howland has been to more Final Fours and Sweet Sixteens than the entire state of Mississippi has been in the history of the tournament. But yeah, he's not good enough for us. **

my thoughts exactly. This is a homerun hire if we were to get him. Three years ago we settled for the assistant coach at clemson, had a dreadful 3 seasons that set us substantially further back as a program than we ever were with stans and now we have a chance to get a coach of this caliber here and people are bitching. yes, in an ideal world john calipari or shaka smart would be our next head coach. Any coach like marshall or mack are holding out for big time openings not a program currently on par with teams that are below average mid majors.

I can quote too.

Howland went to more of a fast-break, up-tempo offense in his final season, and the Bruins went from 69 points a game the year before to 74 per game, winning the Pac-12 regular season with a 13-5 record.
They were routed in their NCAA tournament opener by Minnesota, and Howland was out.
He's sorry he didn't play faster sooner.
"It's something I should have done much earlier in my career," he says. "That is a regret, because I thought it really helped us. (Arizona coach) Sean Miller told me this fall it was really tough for them to deal with how much we pushed the ball. We beat them three times that year. That's something — pushing the tempo — that I'll always do moving forward. It really helped."

I can talk myself into it. My first reaction was I hate his style of play, but I'm glad he realizes he needs to play up-tempo. He doesn't have any recruiting ties to the South, but I guess that can be managed. I like whatever Malik likes. Malik likes Bill Self b/c of Wiggins. Hopefully he likes Howland b/c of Westbrook.

Your name says Hoops so I assume you know a little bit about basketball. Well I know about it as well since I played hoops at a high level.

ESPN just did a segment talking about PPG and defense. And how the past champions were not close to being top scoring teams. Ben Howland has the potential to be the best coach we have had ever. Our style has been pure '****' show for years. Even Stainsberry was pure ****...he couldnt coach at all. Zero ability. His talent is what won games not coachig. Ben's style has been 'Win' games. And he does that by coaching all angles on the court, off the court and during the off season.

I'm nit as plugged in to basketball as I was, but I don't see how this could be anything other than a Homerun hire. Yeah he has been out of coaching for 2 years. But the last thing he did was win the pac-12. He went to the final 4 how many times? Then fell off, changes his style of play and wins the league?!!?! What else do you want?!??!

Chris Mack is from Ohio, played ball at Xavier, and is in the sweet 16 again. That doesn't sound like someone who is coming to MSU. Gregg Marshall makes 1.75 mil at a school that has a fairly easy route to the tournament every year. Not to mention, both of those jobs would be considered better than this one at this time.

If you don't like Howland, that is fine; but if your going to suggest alternatives, at least make them realistic.

You should pay a little more attention to what's written before critiquing. "Not saying they would even consider leaving but those are the young type coaches we should be looking at". They were just examples. Hope that helps

I’m not sure a point that took 5 years to make is a strong one. We could have done much worse, but he is washed up and routinely gets embarrassed by bad teams.

Cool to see this.

Would you mind letting us know what this post will look like in 2025? I’m hoping for good things. Maybe Dampier, Dontae, and Darryl Wilson’s kids will be on the team then?

I love a good bump from 5 years ago. Maybe his teams are frustrating at times but it’s a much better product then before he came here.
