Sorry if some of this has been said before, or is just obvious to all readers, but b/c i'm not on here all the time, i wanted to just point these things out -

1) JC obviously missed on a few players. What he has 'missed' is not necessarily
talent - it's that he THOUGHT they could handle the toughness. They
can't. Maybe the communication b/w the assistant coaches during the recruiting process was not handled properly, but it just seems as if some of them don't have the toughness.

2) JC has GOT to do whatever it takes to get these guys to just play loose --- it's probably not going to happen b/c they don't respect him --- but it's the one sport that you have to play loose....if you don't you will make errors and mental mistakes every time out. These problems have caused as many as 10-12 losses this year. Because of this, we haven't be able to help out our young pitchers, and well - the dominoes kept falling and we are still free-falling to our death.

3) We've recruited well - but i think you will see some changes as far
as what we tell these players during the recruiting process. Cohen i think pushed the 'history' and
the 'past successes in the late 80's a little too much. I think he will
concentrate more on - we want to build a 'program' here - we want to
build it with tough, hard-nosed players. We want you if you want to work
your *** off. He's recruiting approach will definitely change starting
this year.

4) Cohen wanted to start dominating recruiting and in MS of course. He's
got 2 coaching assistants that are either from MS, or have a lot of
contacts in the state. He might go back to just getting the 'best
coaches available', at their position, regardless of their background.
When rebuilding programs you have so much that you have to analyze and
prioritze in regards to fixing problems. JC is overthinking a lot of
things. His personality doesn't really fit ---- for a program that had
such good success --- well, it might, but this is new to him. He's never
had to rebuild a winning program.

Now --- all of us love MSU - it's time to start getting players that not
only RESPECT COACH COHEN, BUT THEY BETTER START RESPECTING MSU BASEBALL
and its past. THEY don't have to love the coach, but they have to
respect his desire to win for the program he loves.

In closing - i don't give a crap about all that is
going on behind the scenes. Some players get hurt that they get cussed
out, some get pissed that they don't play, some might not care about the
name that is on their uniform. If after the dust settles and some of
these players don't man up and get over 'whatever is bothering them'
(within reason), then get the hell out of here. Call us and we will pack
your bags. This is Mississippi State and we want players that want to
get us back to national prominance. Not everyone is cut out to be one of
those that made it happen.

Flame away...disagree or agree, those are just my thoughts.

1. As far toughness- Ogden, a Cohen recruit is playing with a broken foot right now. He is not a great player by any means, but I'm not going to question his toughness. I don't know how anyone else feels, but the guys that I'm actually the most comfortable with at the plate right now are Conner Powers, Luke Adkins, Nick Vickerson, and Jaron Shepherd. The guys that seem to me to be the least tough are Polk's guys like Jet.

2. As far as Cohen's style- and I will say that I am not at practice- but from talking to him tonight, I could tell that he is a guy that is very sarcastic. I could see where it would be very easy to take what he says the wrong way. What we need are people that can handle the sarcasm and are worried about winning and not what Cohen is going to say to them when they screw up.

3. I don't think using our past history to recruit is a bad thing at all. In fact we SHOULD use it. Hey, come to MSU we can get you to the Big Leagues like Clark and Papelbon. HS kids know who Papelbon is, and they know who Paul Maholm is. Tradition is a good thing. I think that the last staff didn't use it enough. They took down all of our championships off of the fence, that's a really obvious recruiting tool right there. I do agree with you about recruiting hard nosed players- and I think we are doing that.

4. Mississippi has some good players here. How did Ole Miss start building their program? With Seth Smith, Head, Pettway, the Henry brothers- all Mississippians. How about the USM team last year? Dozier, Todd MacInnis, BA Vollmuth- all Mississippians. I'm not saying that we should go all Mississippi- we aren't- Cody Abraham from Texas, CT Bradford from Florida, Adam Frazier from Georgia, and all of the pitchers from Alabama, not to meniton Daryl Norris. Most of our Louisville Slugger All-Americans are out of state guys. We have to start somewhere, and honestly, for us being the largest school in the state, Mississippi is a logical place to start. I think getting good recruiters is something that we really need right now because we need talent. Cohen is a highly respected hitting coach in his own right, as it is. And you are correct, he never has had to rebuild a program like MSU, but he has at least built a program in the SEC. I don't really think there's that much diffrence except that you have a lot more people that care here, a little bit more difficult, but he also has at least done it before, and at least has an idea of what to do.

Shepherd seems more comfortable out there with every passing game, and Vickerson has been solid at the plate and could be a depth guy or DH assuming we have Luwallen, Norris and the other freshman you said may start in our infield.

who hits .300+ in SEC play. Vickerson's D may suck, but his bat more than offsets it. DH might be his best fit if he had a little more pop, but it seems like we'll have 3-4 DH candidates next season.

Definitely agree on Shepherd. I'd love to see him take over the leadoff role. He'd be a huge weapon for us in that spot.

that Herb Brooks gave his Olympic hockey players in order to know how hard he could push them?? Obviously Cohen needs to give this test to his players cause it sounds like the majority of them would flunk it if he is just being too tough on them and putting too much pressure on them. I realize that baseball isn't hockey but to play championship ball in any sport you have to be pushed to be your best. A coach doesn't have to be liked to be good so I'm not worried about the players not liking him near as much as the fact that we don't have a lot of players improving their play very much at the moment.

I know you said you talked to him a little bit after the show was over, so if you called in - did they ask you to stay on hold until the show was over or did you call back in? This is obviously not that important, just was wondering how you got to talk to him after the show. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure at least from listening to the recording on M2M because the great Hobie Hobart introduced him

Good Stuff Todd...

Personally, I don't see him being drafted very highly after his slow start, but who knows? If he goes high enough, whatever round he decides that is, I could see him going. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Personally, I'm hoping it's low enough that he chooses to come back, has a big season next year, and goes in the first 10 rounds after his SR season.

face to face. Cohen was talking to some people after the show and I went up to him and thanked him for answering my question. Then we got to talking a little bit- it wasn't like we sat down in a booth and talked about baseball for an hour- just a few minutes.

another spot that Vickerson could play is LF or RF. I think he could make that transition pretty easily and be a good outfielder.

Granted, he was barely there long enough to 17 up before being moved back to 2B. But he made several nice plays when I listened. Duffy might be the worst defensive player ever. He's so awful defensively at his natural position, catcher, that Cohen pulled him in the middle of an inning last season. And Duffy hasn't been seen behind the plate since. He's the definition of DH. If it weren't for Sneed's hip, we'd probably have Sneed at 3B, Vickerson in LF or at SS, and Duffy as DH.

I was at that game last year when that happened and have never seen anything like that before and like wont again...
But I'm going to have to disagree with you on Jet as I sit in the LF and watch him pretty close the games he was there
and it wasnt always pretty. He usually still made the play but the routes to the ball and reaction was not good.
