He was the winning pitcher against LSU. These guys want to pitch you up, which I don't think we've seen this year (95% of teams we've faced pitch down in the zone). They live and die off throwing at the top of the zone... and pitches up there look very good to hit (but mostly result in high pop-ups). LSU swang away, coupled with Plutko's excellent work at the top of the zone, and limited their potency. It will be interesting to see how we approach these guys...

I, as a fan, would much rather face this guy than a strike out pitcher. I think we're good enough at the plate (at least we have been) to not try to do too much against him and hit singles. I thought LSU tried to hit HRs against this guy, and we probably won't try do that.

Having said that, I would not want to be the guy throwing balls up in the zone to Hunter Renfroe and Wes Rae. Frazier can handle the bat well enough to go the other way as well.

If our midget crew will be patient, we could draw a ton of walks against this guy if he likes staying up in the zone

Agreed. The idea is to make him work his way down so you get more manageable pitches. Forcing him to work down increases the likelihood of getting a very hittable fastball, right in the sweet spot.

It also depends on how friendly the umpire is at the top of the zone. The upstairs pitches tend to vary the most umpire to umpire. If he's calling sternum-high strikes, we don't stand a chance to get walks.

However, the hardest part is laying off pitches... because high fastballs are VERY enticing to want to swing at. There is a reason so many pitchers in MLB use the nipple-high fastball and climbing the ladder as out pitches. It's much harder to judge the angle out of the pitchers hand and if the hitter makes contact, it's going straight up in the air.

Our coaches must have been pounding patience into their heads

We continually watched first pitch strikes and big-plate strikes on the edge of the zone, all series. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I never said he was not good. I just said of all the pitchers we have faced he has the worst stat line and record.

Ucla likes to pitch up. We like to pitch down. The ump could be huge in how he calls strikes. Hopefully he has low zone

That ain't gonna happen. We've been hacking away like our life depended on it all year, don't see that stopping now. We make damn good adjustments though. Damn good.

Well

actually him stating that Plutko is one of the worst pitchers we've faced this far in Omaha is quiet relevant. However, you're right in saying what Graveman did vs OSU is completely irrelevant.
