Re: Political Thread: Closing Guantanamo?

Gitmo is a lose-lose situation for us right now. Keep it open, and you're maintaining a massive recruiting tool (and bargaining chip) for the terrorist networks. Close it down, and you have to find a place to safely store the scumbags.

Re: Political Thread: Closing Guantanamo?

So hypothetically speaking, if we decide to stop droning terrorists off the map along with their families, are we just going to send them to CIA black sites when Guantanamo is gone?

But I guess it wouldn't matter because Guantanamo would be gone. Kill them. Send them to CIA black sites. Just DO NOT send them to Cuba. Jay Z wants to be able to go to Cuba without having to worry about a prison break.

You are drinking the Liberal koolaid now. That bunch of ragheads don't need a recruiting tool, they hate us regardless.

And you're reading into it too much. I said it was "a" recruiting tool. Not the only one, by any means. Just like civilian casualties in Iraq/Afghanistan are paired with the drone war to make it seem like the West doesn't give a **** about Muslims' human rights, Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, etc are used as examples of us not having a justice system superior to what the Islamic world has.

It's all propaganda, and minimizing the amount of ammunition we give them is important. Nameless rumored CIA interrogation camps are vastly superior to a monolith as well-documented and well-known to potential recruits as Guantanamo is.

I still don't get it. All the American lives administrations have undoubtedly sacrificed standing by the mantra of not negotiating with terrorists. Then Obama mortgages the farm to free this guy? Undoubtedly, Obamas camp thought this would be a huge PR win for the administration. But how? It just doesn't add up.

He got to put on a dog and pony show in the rose garden, he got to trot out parents of a deserter, where the father looks like a Taliban fighter, and a mother that would do anything to get her son back. It was a political show for Obama, remember, Obama will never pass up a chance to be on TV. The guy is in love with himself, more than anyone else.

He got some very poor advice on this one. I definitely think it was a PR move by the way he handled the publicity with the family. I don't understand it either. Just shows how out of touch politicians are.

I remember when dee and others on the left wanted a windfall tax on Exxon's $11b profit. Wonder why there is no similar talk with Apple who reported an $18b one today, especially when you look at the slave-like labor at Foxconn.

Big difference. We don't have to buy Iphones, but we do have to buy gas.

The only explanation I can think of is that he needed some justification for releasing the Taliban prisoners, so he claimed Bergdahl was in imminent danger and brought home one of our soldiers. Unbelievable. (And he goes all in with this press announcement with his parents.)

^Yes we do have to buy gas. Which makes the efforts of fracking entrepreneurs, and the resulting bottoming out of the market price for it, all the sweeter. Every time I fill up, I give a silent "thanks" to the frackers, despite this administration's desire that they not exist.

The choice isn't necessarily limited to 1) Guantanamo, 2) drones/death, 3) CIA black sites or other non-US sites. We have super max facilities in the US, several of which hold terrorists. IIRC, Idaho or Montana volunteered to host a US-based Guantanamo like facility.

I get there are arguments against it (many valid), but if one was designated (or built) as a non-judicial containment facility, I don't see how it would be materially different from Guantanamo. While Guantanamo was initially chosen, in part, because it was not in the US and therefore certain parts of the Constitution did not apply, that was effectively eviscerated by the Supreme Court in Boumediene. So having a Guantanamo-like facility in the US is really different only in location.

Barry expected his Adoring Media to run with the "OBAMA RESCUES AMERICAN SOLDIER FROM TERRORISTS" coverage... and since his faithful lemmings would never read beyond that headline, it was a PR win for him and the Dems with the elections approaching.

What I cannot understand is why Obama continues to work with Iran on any sort of deal on anything. Iran has made no bones about wanting to kill Jews and wipe them off the face of the earth and we have allowed them to get very close to a nuclear weapon and they already have long range missiles. It baffles me really. Today we learn that Iran is plotting to assassinate Netanyahu's (sp) kids. Seriously think about it. Our president is vowing to veto any further sanctions against a murderous regime/sponsor of terrorists that wants to assassinate another presidents children, kill American's and wipe Israel off the face of the earth. It's weird to me that this isn't a bigger deal to the American people.

Obama wants to count Cuba and Iran as foreign policy successes. Simple as that. He's already touted Cuba as one despite it being one of the more irrelevant of current FP topics. Would be thrilled to say "I FIXED IRAN THAT WAS EASIE LOL", write it in the next memoir, and move on.

FP has been a pure dumpster fire under him, but that hasn't stopped him from saying whatever tf he wants.

So he is trying to have a couple of weak *** foreign policy "wins" to support his legacy as a good well rounded president? Man I hadn't thought of that but it makes sense with this potus. Neither are going to be "wins" for him so I would suggest he actually do something hard and actually try to have a foreign policy and make a real difference.

Too effing true.

Obviously, a large segment of BHO's lemmings don't care... as long as the checks keep coming their way. As for those that do oppose BO, a lot of them are just worn out (part of the Lib-Dem plan) seeing this pitiful excuse for a Prez get away with lying about everything for 6+ years.

As it relates to the FP issues, WHAT I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND is how BHO has so much support from the Jews in America???

I'll play devil's advocate to offer up a possible counter argument. Are sanctions really effective? How would proposed sanctions (disclaimer: haven't seen any details of anything) deter Iran from 1) supporting Hezbollah, 2) gaining a nuke, 3) further developing long range missiles, and 4) not plot other outrageous acts? Sanctions sound nice, and it's doing something rather than nothing, but I think there's a good case to be made that sanctions (past a certain point, like obviously we bar stuff that can be used to make nukes) don't really do anything. So is this an American flag lapel thing (who cares?) or a real, effective policy?

The greater good for many is not the goal. As long as their agenda is still being pushed, America be damned. How bad we get hurt as a nation seems to be way down on the list.

"Ask not what your country can do for you but, what you can do for your country". No longer resonates with the party he was affiliated with. The party of takers cares not for this country.

As many have noted this past week:

BHO will spend time with a youtuber who is "famous" for sitting in a bathtub of cereal and milk, while she eats it... but BHO can't quite fit it into his busy schedule to meet with the Prime Minister of Israel.

That should sum up the "legacy" for this POS Prez.

Obviously I'm not suggesting anyone do this, but I wonder how the hell the IRS is going to go about figuring out if people are telling the truth if they just check the box "yes" that they had health insurance for the entire year.

Especially considering the IRS doesn't have the authority to collect the tax other than offsetting any refund due.

How much money did the CBO caluclate that shared responsibility payment would bring? $0?

From CNN:

"One of the five Taliban detainees released from Guantanamo Bay in return for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has attempted to return to militant activity, several U.S. officials tell CNN's Barbara Starr.

They were released to Qatar, which had said it would monitor the former detainees' activities. Shortly after their release in May for Bergdahl, President Barack Obama said, "I wouldn't be doing it if I thought that it was contrary to American national security." "

Wow so Romney is stepping aside so we can have another Bush vs another Clinton.

Really wish he'd at least stay in the primary. Would rather have him and Bush splitting the, "the media tells me this guy can beat Hilary so I'm going to vote for him just because I want a R to win and even though I know deep down they'd both be terrible for this country and as soon as the primary is over the media will start that narrative" vote. Let Rand try and slide through.

The "same old names" narrative is going to be pretty damn entertaining to watch due to Jeb....ole Hillary is going to get lumped in nicely. The fake indian lady has got to be happy.

Would like the 30 other R retreads to part ways as well. Leave Jeb as the establishment candidate to let Rand Paul (or whoever) to rail on. A conservative can undue Jeb, at least I think so. Then let the chips fall where they may in the general against that old bag. Plead your damn case.
