If one were to look at the current political system logically and objectively, they might see a pattern of politicians running for office to try to avoid or control investigations and jail time. Lyndon Johnson said it well-

Yes but there is more too. If im labeled a racist as an attack mechanism, i lose my entire career. A few years ago, that happens just on the accusation. Nowadays at least you get some semblance of a chance to defend yourself, but usually for naught.

For far too long that de facto designation is a way to hold people in line via economic threats.
