I replied to another thread about a good story involving Ron Polk with the following and it got me curious. I'll just copy and paste in that context.

<table summary="user post and replies"> <tbody id="post-id-189082" class="expandable thread-post even post reply msudogsrule01 post-read"> <tr> <td class="th firstcol poster-name"><span class="user-name"><font color="#800000">msudogsrule01</font></span></td> <td class="th post-subject"></td> <td class="th post-number">#1</td> <td class="th post-url"><a name="reply-189082"></a><font color="#800000">[url]</font></td> <td class="th toggle lastcol"><span class="collapse-button">[-]</span></td> </tr> <tr class="collapsible-content"> <td class="firstcol poster-detail"> <div class="avatar-block"> <p class="user-avatar"> </p> <p class="post-count"><span>Posts</span>: 107</p> <p class="post-date"><span class="date">07/07/09</span> <span class="time">11:34 AM</span></p> </div> </td> <td class="lastcol post-content" colspan="4"> <div class="post-body"> <div class="scrolling"> <div> That's the Ron Polk I want to remember.

Dan Patrick made a great comment on the Steve McNair death the yesterday. He asked the question of how people would remember Steve; as the football player or the person of the field. And he said we choose that. We buy into the people and the personality that we see on TV. The games, the polished interviews, the public conversations. Then they have their own lives. (In this case Polks was still very public and mainly asshattery). But, I choose to remember the good stuff. I'll always remember what he did recently but that will fade. My anger will fade.

Polk is a legend.

But I think he will be similar to Jackie. Jackie tanked the last 3 years, and I hated him for it. Now I'm back to remembering the good years of the late 90's. I bet Polk's memory will be much the same.

When we are winning big again...which I think we will be in the next two years, all will be forgotten. May many cigars be raised in honor (one day) of Coach Polk.

I will still be mad at the little bastard for acting a damn *** when Cohen was named Head Coach.

Was he an asshat for trying to sabotage our coaching search? Absolutely.

But, where would our baseball program have been without him? Yes, it was very good, and I have often chastised the Polk loyalists that don't give credit to Dudy Noble, R P Patty, Paul Gregory, and even Pat McMahon, but the fact remains that Polk took us from good program to very good, and at one time a top 10 program. Polk is the reason we have really high expectations, and he is also why we were able to hire a good baseball coach, and why we were able to get people like Pat Casey to even consider the job. Heck, Paul Manieri who just won the NC was practically begging for the MSU job at one time.

And even his asshattery was in large part because he was loyal to a fault to one of his former players and then assistant who really wanted the job. The thing a lot of people don't realize about Polk is he is that loyal about his other players as well. And yes, I am aware that Cohen was a former player to, but I think Polk felt like Raffo was still a part of the program and loyal to it- possibly turning down other coaching jobs depending on who and what you believe- to stay. Whether you agree or not, that's how Polk thought.

I blame LT for Polk II. Rule number 1 in the hiring coaches manual is don't hire back a legend. Templeton should have said no and looked at all possibilities before bringing back Polk because it was convenient, easy, and somewhat popular. After what Polk did in the 80's, the only way he was going to be able to outdo himself was to win a NC, and he wasn't likely to do that in the 2000's past his prime. The "having the fire back" was simply an outright lie to try to appease those, like me, who were skeptical. I don't blame Polk for wanting to come back, but I blame LT for saying not saying no. The only capacity he should have been brought back as would be as a volunteer assistant and that's it.
