Don't consider the playcall. Just the decision to go for it on fourth and not even an inch, up four late in fourth quarter.

Yes. Playing the percentages unemotionally instead of hunches and gut feelings is always the right call. Sucks for them to come down on the wrong side of probability but they'll usually come out ahead doing that.

When I saw them going for it two things went through my mind, 1) I'd punt it because if you don't get it aTm will have a short field and, 2) shirley, they can make 4th and inches. I think something else that was going through Freeze's mind was how tired his defense was getting. Still, I think I would have tried to give aTm the long field with ittle time and down by 4. UM's punter was averaging something like 46 yds per punt. Could have easily pinned aTm inside the 20. But hey, hindsight is 20/20 and I'm glad Ole Miss lost.

Your statement is completely non sequitur. Going for it on your own 40 yard line with 2 minutes left is based entirely on emotion. Logic and playing percentages say you punt. This is why successful coaches always make this decision much like the ones you indirectly criticized in your thread below.

i only say yes because on the last TAMU drive, Ole Miss let them score in 3 plays. their defense was reeling. if they gained 3 inches, they avoid putting their defense on the field and win the game right there.

however, that shotgun run was absolutely horrible. why not put Wallace under center and qb sneak? dude is like 7'5, he would have gotten 3 inches simply because of his hair.

My first thought was about Special Ed. Ogeron was up by 14, though, so in my mind he had less of a risk to lose that game. The percentages may favor Freeze going for it, but the position on the field and the fact that the lead was only 4 make the risk of failure trump the percentages. Punt.

I would have punted. But I can understand the decision to go. The bears defense was giving up big chunks of yards and I'm sure Freeze figured they couldn't stop them. Make the first down, they probably win. Of course I'm glad it worked out the way it did. :)

You have to punt in that situation. If you don't make it which of course they

didn't then it is almost a guaranteed loss with that short of a field and the emotional damage
resulting from the fail. If you get off a good punt and pin them back you have a fighting chance and
no one questions your coaching ability. Maybe it was a ballsy call maybe just dumb, they are not ready to start calling him the "Riverboat Gambler Just Yet".

Wrong call. For all the reasons already mentioned. Also the percentages of them driving 80 yards for a TD is less than that for a 40 yard drive...much less with 4 minutes left.
