We definitely disagree hard on this one, Grant. That's ok. Listen to Between the Buttons then Let It Bleed then Exile then Some Girls then Tattoo You. There's quite an evolution from 60s mod-pop to politically-infused rock lyrics to southern blues jams to disco-punk to stadium rock.

I get that Zeppelin was super protective of who could license their music for moves and media, but The Stones are far more ingrained in the American pop consciousness than Zeppelin. Call it what you will, but that matters in these debates.

The Stones are the better, more impactful band for me. And it's not all that close.
Sorry, but to say that Zeppelin never evolved is just patently false and that isn't a matter of opinion. I laid out several musical reasons to demonstrate this and I could come up with more. Oh, and they are also not overrated, that is my opinion, and they are definitely not a "jam" band.

As I said, the Stones did evolve quite a bit up until about Beggar's Banquet. After that, they really just stuck to mostly the same formula. And since you brought it up, Tattoo You is a compilation of outtakes from the previous decade. The fact that that album sounds cohesive is another indication that they really didn't change all that much over the decade.

In terms of "better more impactful band", I didn't offer anything on that. That is opinion based and I think can be fairly argued both ways.

Zeppelin is the most overrated band in history. They were a great jam band, but had one sound and never evolved.

The Stones have likely three of the top 10-15 albums of all time, and a bevy of rock anthems spanning the 60s through 80s.

All three of these bands are all time greats, but The Stones and The Beatles stand alone at the top of the rock Pantheon.
If you want to listen to a one sound band, I give you the Stones. Your comments about Zeppelin are asinine.

Not a massive fan of any of the three, but I'd probably go The Who, Rolling Stones, then Led Zep. Would be LZ first but man, they ripped off a TON of stuff from others...

They did? Yo mean like the lawsuit they won brought by someone who claimed they ripped off his stuff in Stairway to Heaven?

seen all three live, the who post Keith Moon. Best performance in terms rock and roll musicianship was Who,. Stones at least when I saw them were more stage show than rock concert. Zep was OK, had some good moments but also some extended boring, bloated self indulgent moments.......
I saw a quote about Moon vs Bonham that made me laugh. Can’t remember it exactly but it went something like this: Bonham’s genius was in the gaps. With Keith Moon there were none.

“Start Me Up” originated as a reggae demo in the mid-70s. That changed wholesale by the time they released it on Tattoo You. If you don’t see that kind of experimentation aa major evolution, then I can’t help you.

You’re wrong. Go listen to The Stones. You’re thinking of their stadium show war horses, but listen to the albums. There’s a ton of variance and evolution through the 70s.

Just check the writing credits on a bunch of their songs. You'll see names like Willie Dixon, who sued and won for 'Whole Lotta Love' and others.

Yeah, you’re avoiding the fact that you said zeppelin never evolved (not to mention overrated and a jam band).

and no, changing a reggae song to a two chord rock song with a variation of Keith’s signature rhythm riff is not much evolution to me. It’s one of their more simple and frankly boring songs.

Not implying any band is better than another, but I listen to more Supertramp and ELO than Stones, Beatles, and The Who.

Listed alphabetically in the subject, but how would you rank them?

And yes I know the Beatles could be on here too but it's my poll and I'm leaving them off.
Zeppelin for sex.
The Who for anger.
Stones for when I'm chillin' in the backyard.

I don’t think Led Zeppelin or The Who were around long enough. After the death of John Bohnam and Keith Moon the groups broke apart and instead focused on solo work. The Stones on the other hand replaced band members and persevered as a group, and had quite a run.

Where does each band wander into new and wonderful?
The Who, maybe on Squeeze Box?
Zeppelin maybe on Kashmir?

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones….

Mick and the Boys (W/ Ronnie on steel guitar) also performed Bob Wills is Still the King. They should/could have been nominated for Country Grammy's for Country Honk, Far Away Eyes, and maybe a few others.

They're all like 80 years old and I'd much prefer this to today's Bro Country - which, seemingly impossibly, has become more insufferable than rap music.

Yeah, agree. Their library of country music is considerable. Probably rivals the Grateful Dead for going down that path and bringing some respect to the genre.

This thread reminds me of an interesting discussion that I've had with many friends over the years.

Why are the best rock bands British? I think if most people vote, the top 5 is these 3, plus the Beatles and probably Floyd.
Conversely, the best rock solo acts tend to be American - Elvis, Hendrix, Dylan, Prince (ok, Bowie is an exception). I hesitate to include MJ in this, but one could argue for it.

It then begs the question of, who is the best American rock band? Responses tend to be pretty varied compared to the typically solid consensus of aforementioned Brit bands.

Alice Cooper said that when he and the guys talked about the old times, about 75% of the stories were true. When he went out with Moon, they were all true and he could only tell half of them.

Aerosmith, Van Halen, Metallica, Skynyrd, and Pearl Jam would probably make most lists of best American rock bands.

I would include the Eagles, the Dead and the Allman Brothers. Also Nirvana. They may have been short lived but their impact was huge and they have one of the best selling albums of all time.

you have good taste, having said that, yeah, this is solid, But it has been Done before. 1973, Rod Argent of Argent, a talented keyboardist put this sound out there for the world to hear. He had previously been in the Zombies, wrote or co wrote many of their songs and was a solid jazz musician as well.

You are a bit of a tweener, so the classic discussion is often lost on you or your curiosity is lacking but you seem to crave new music so no reason to believe you are not curious. Tgar believes it’s the tweener aspect that has not exposed you to the cravings in your madness.

Play this loud, as loud as you can. You should also be standing in your living room naked and howling while pounding ice cold Miller Lites after ripping a big hit on some delicious Bud. This is Buzz music. Russ Ballard, guitar, and Rod Argent, keyboards had great careers and influenced lots of musicians and produced lots of music as well. Have fun!

ill argue forever there’s not a mother fvvcker on here with a more diverse music fandom than the rick. Youze are put off by my punk sensibilities and can’t see past it. FUN discussion. I respect your and rude dudes live music creds, ODs bandmanship and vinyl and grants tech/musicianship and ALWAYS enjoy yours point of view. After the tub I’ll make my argument for how truly ver my palate is. I apologize beforehand for being wrecked but 2 hours ago my bro got a kidney scheduled at PENN (hope was waning) in a few days were blowing up here

name one person on here who’s seen both of these live?
