Speaking of diverse music tastes, I remember checking out at Circuit City back when people bought CD's, and I realized I had Metallica's black album CD and Cat Stevens' Greatest Hits CD in my basket.

I would hazard a guess that no one else in the history of mankind ever purchased those 2 CDs at the same time.

It's not too late to seek help.
Up w/ a sick 19 y/o cat. Thus the timing of this post.

My preferred Stones almost always has two Mick's in it - and that's a short window - but a really great window.

Other than Revolver and Rubber Soul, I outgrew the Beatles. The early Beatles songs could be performed live, but they all sounded the same after awhile. The later (good) Beatles songs were just them in a studio copying Brian Wilson who was copying Phil Spector.

The Who - I liked, especially early stuff like Meaty. But other than Who's Next, I lost interest.

Supertramp is imo the most underrated band I can think of (other than maybe Three Dog Night - who get zero love from anyone). Supertramp wrote their own music though and had a 4 album stretch that is hard to match with Crime/Crisis/Even/Breakfast. There is not a bad song on any of them.

I also think Roger Waters must have listened to a lot of Crime of the Century.

As for ELO, they had the production built in in Jeff Lynne. They were what the Beatles would have become - according to Lennon - and I agree.

Almost all musicians borrow from or feed off what others are doing but this is just a ridiculous exaggeration. You make it seem like the Beatles weren’t doing anything original which is absolutely incorrect.

Some band's music translated to the live stage, some band's didn't. We'll never see a video of the Beatles performing Tomorrow Never Knows. Doesn't mean it wasn't great, just that it was heavily produced - like the good Beach Boy songs.

Yeah, again. To say that the Beatles were just "copying" the Beach Boys is absurd. What isn't absurd is that many many bands copied the Beatles.

And the Beatles stopped playing live music because they couldn't hear themselves on stage. Had nothing to do with studio music not translating to a stage.

The above clip shows that. Bits and pieces are stolen all the time or enhanced or modified. People acting like this is something new don't seem to have a real appreciation of how music has evolved.

Funny Beatles worship is funny.
It's not worship. It's telling it like it is. I really don't even listen to the Beatles anymore.
It is very possible to not like a band but recognize their contributions. There are many bands I don't like but can appreciate their quality.
You are a good music fan, but this is a large blind spot for you.

I’d also like to go on record I dislike supertramp. A blind spot too?
While we’re chatting, what do you know about lunching in Bend?

The blind spot isn't disliking a band. It is the inability to impartially evaluate a band despite disliking them. I don't really care for Supertramp either, but I recognize that they were a really good band that wrote some really good songs. For me, same goes for Steely Dan and Yes. Fantastic musicians, just doesn't work for me (well, except "Dirty Work" - love that song).

Lunch in Bend, OR? Why will you be there? I don't know the Bend food scene very well. My only suggestion is the Deschutes Brewery/Public House.

this goes against every reason I like music. why do I have to impartially evaluate something I don’t like? for example, I think Billy Joel sucks. You can’t argue me out of that position by telling me he’s a technical wizard on piano

I personally don't think that any of the "big four" were even the best British band from their era.

I can't believe Mannequin ***** is worth that much for making music that would have gotten them 5th place in a middle school talent show. Good for them.

Do you listen to anything that doesn't, in some way, resemble, animals dying? Or is that all that gets you going when you're moshing with disaffected 18-year-olds?

You are a bit of a tweener, so the classic discussion is often lost on you or your curiosity is lacking

ill argue forever there’s not a mother fvvcker on here with a more diverse music fandom than the rick. Youze are put off by my punk sensibilities and can’t see past it. FUN discussion. I respect your and rude dudes live music creds, ODs bandmanship and vinyl and grants tech/musicianship and ALWAYS enjoy yours point of view. After the tub I’ll make my argument for how truly ver my palate is. I apologize beforehand for being wrecked but 2 hours ago my bro got a kidney scheduled at PENN (hope was waning) in a few days were blowing up here

name one person on here who’s seen both of these live?

Seen these guys half a dozen times

But HATE this ****

Most folks liked the Ramones when they were teens. And then they grew up. You stagnated. It happens.

It's like pro-rassling. It's for pre-teens and tweens ... but occasionally you'll see grown men still into it.

What you don't usually see is those pro-rassling fans trying to talk down to the normal, well-adjusted folks for their alleged bad taste.

Late 70s ! This was on a much traded bootleg and finally released a couple years ago I believe. We saw him jam this in the late 70s along with a whole lot of other great songs that never reached commercial success.

On The Beach covered by Radio Head sounds like your wheelhouse!

So funny, son 1 came in for moms day and played me sedan delivery 2 days ago, first time I ever heard it.he may have played a live version I didn’t feel like findinc but we both agreed NY made a punk song

Mick and the Boys (W/ Ronnie on steel guitar) also performed Bob Wills is Still the King. They should/could have been nominated for Country Grammy's for Country Honk, Far Away Eyes, and maybe a few others.

They're all like 80 years old and I'd much prefer this to today's Bro Country - which, seemingly impossibly, has become more insufferable than rap music.

They’re a diverse and unique band. The GOAT, IMO.

So I have a first pressing of Nevermind right now that kicks *** like an angry mule. Just borrowing. Sounds like you're in the damn studio.

Also heard a Track first pressing of Electric Ladyland this weekend that makes your hair stand on its end. Voodoo Chile and Vodoo Child slight return were both just a tour de force. The realism and soundstage were tremendous.

This thread reminds me of an interesting discussion that I've had with many friends over the years.

Why are the best rock bands British? I think if most people vote, the top 5 is these 3, plus the Beatles and probably Floyd.
Conversely, the best rock solo acts tend to be American - Elvis, Hendrix, Dylan, Prince (ok, Bowie is an exception). I hesitate to include MJ in this, but one could argue for it.

It then begs the question of, who is the best American rock band? Responses tend to be pretty varied compared to the typically solid consensus of aforementioned Brit bands.
You are stirring the pot now, Grant. But it’s obviously Huey Lewis and the News.
