6A North is deep this year! A lot of really quality teams on the list. I am going to narrow the list down though and say it will be one of these teams:
Westfield
Centreville
Battlefield
Patriot
South County
Westfield seems to be the team with the hot hand in the 6A North section. Their resume of teams they have defeated so far looks good, and the win over their rival Centreville gave them a great boost for the last few regular season games and heading into the playoffs. I do wonder if they can outlast the rest of the competition and beat Centreville again if they were to play one more time.
All eyes have been on Centreville this year. Now that they have two losses on their schedule you kind of get the sense that there may very well be a new champ in 6A North, especially when considering all of the teams involved. I will not write off Centreville though, I don't think anybody is. Maybe the regular season was not their time to wow everybody but the playoffs may be. Based on that Washington Post article it does sound like Turner will be back by the first round of the playoffs, that is if he isn't already back by the final game against Robinson. Depending on how fast he gels back into actually playing, that should be a big lift for a team that has actually done pretty well without having their top threat the entire season.
I like Battlefield as the well-rounded, well-coached team that is balanced on offense and strong on defense. Win or lose, whoever they play, Centreville, Westfield, South County, Robinson etc. it will be a game. Maybe not the favorite but big contender here.
Patriot arguably has the most dangerous offense of the bunch that will score with any team. Their QB-WR connection in Agnew and Matthews has been unstoppable all year and probably the best combination in the state. Add in the balance of their two RB's that have combined for 1,400+ yards, they will be a tough offense to slow down in the playoffs. Their defense has given up a lot of points though which is why I see it as more unlikely that they would win 6A North. But with their big offense and experience of losing in the opening round last season, I would expect them to win at least two playoff games.
In the end I voted for South County, but I would like to listen to how they do against Lake Braddock. Their schedule doesn't seem to have been as strong as the other four teams, but they are still undefeated and one of the highest scoring 6A teams North or South. It wasn't up until a week or two ago did I realize South County was having such a big season, since you usually hear about Westfield, Centreville, or Robinson first. (I think that has to do with those three teams having tougher schedules and bigger games each week.) Not too sure about what they have but it sounds like they could be the team this year in 6A North.
Battlefield Vs. Patriot will be a showdown next week. This is the Westfield Vs. Centreville of Prince William County football.
Happy Halloween people.
