since Croom ruined him- but Tony Burks was not bad. I think Co-Eric Riley had a lot of potential to be good to and was also messed over by the previous staff.

i know he hasn't played yet, but I have seen him and I think he will be the "real deal" once he gets healthy. (he is fast AND can catch)

This is really one of my favorite topics. I remember in 05 when Croom wrestled Gardhigh away from Marshall. He had everyone convinced that he had landed the big time receiver we needed. That was the same signing day he preached about how he didn't ever want to sign any receivers shorter than him and there on the commit list sat Adron Chambers.

I just ran through the Blitz database quickly. How I could forget Mills is beyond me.

I have not done this, but I would guess there is not one position list we would look at over the Croom era and say that he really recruited that position well.

getting that guy ranked only second to the Gardhigh signing.

Seriously, Adron Chambers was like 5'8". Croom could've swallowed him. Come to think of it, where did he wind up? Maybe he did.

We were able to steal Mills from USM. Croom said we have to do everything we can to get this kid ready because he can really play.

Easily the worst 4 year run of QB + WR recruiting in SEC history and I am including the pre-segregation days.

He told LT that he would be playing WR on Sundays. We actually did better with players the staff didn't have to recruit or evaluate: Brandon McRae, Tyson Lee, Lance Long, Jaymel Smith, Jamar Chaney, and Christian Ducre were all walk-ons or transfers that fell in our lap. Tobias Smith, Oneal Wilder, Aubrey Bell were all offered grayshirts until spots opened up. Think about all the players that were offered before these guys.

It's pretty easy to see why Croom failed. Even the archaic offense he ran coupled with the terrible gameday coaching could've been overcome (to at least a decent degree) had the guy recruited guys that were just SEC caliber. Looking at lists like this should also trim some of the wool off MState fans concerning the prospects of this upcoming season. Folks, Croom left Mullen very little to work with, and this time it's not simply a line to cover up crappy performance.

This says it all. We were starting walk ons and transfers in Croom's 4th and 5th years. That's embarrasing.

Give Henig a chance.

All I need to know concerning Croom's ability to evaluate QBs is this: he geniunely thought Henig was the answer, even after the 6-pick game. This may sound mean, but we are lucky he was so injury prone.

which I gave Croom a pass on even though he probably would've signed the same class no matter how long he'd been around.

I had a great view of it. That was the only good pass Rutland made in his career at MState, and man it was a beauty. Unfortunately we had Featherstone at WR and it went right through his hands. We didn't come close to scoring the rest of the night. What a way to open the wonderful 2006 season. Memories.
