Mark's bias is from his experiences as a player, and he knows that UK fans in general were fed up with Calipari's constant name on the back focus.

To be honest, it was probably a big part of why he was hired.

This is a case of Pope saying what he thinks the Kentucky fans want to hear, and I"m sure there is a segment of fans who were all in during the 80's/90's that like hearing it.
I was there and I was. But this isn’t how you run a program. Sell both recruit high level players and then they become family and the train continues. Not “suck it it’s Kentucky take it or leave it” and then just roll. It’s not how this works.

What Pope said:
“I think our focus is finding guys that want to be at Kentucky because of what Kentucky is. …We’ll find the guys, there's no play like place like this”.

What I heard:
We're not going to have as much money next year and none of the top recruits want to play for me so we're going to have to get some players from minor conferences that want a chance see if they're good enough for the SEC.
Which will again lead us to a 19-13 season if we are lucky.

Popes recruiting pitch probably sounds like this:

“Hey kid, come play basketball on my team so I can base your playing time on analytics we use. Let’s not talk about the nba and all of UK’s former players there”
We have like 6 all stars, multiple gold medal winners, 86 players in the league. Now Anthony Davis has a freaking TV show, and he can’t sign a high school player. That should be impossible.

Oweh isn’t going to take your team far. But on the topic, Calipari was extreme yes. You didn’t see coach K undersell the program importance and he still landed those guys and they rep the brotherhood stuff even today. You use all the tools you have the program is a tool. This isn’t hard. Use both, don’t go extreme in either direction. That is 100% true there is no debate.
Oweh is basically the only reason we competed at all.

Say what you will about Cal, and I was ready for him to go, but at least he understood and kept up with the changing landscape of college basketball.

Pope and Mitch are stuck in the 90s.
I can't read Cal's mind nor would I want to but I think Cal's reason for saying 'it was about the players' was and is, if I can get the players, they win and he wins and then the program wins. You have to have the players. Pope hasn't figured that out.

Now I do believe it was time for UK and Cal to split.

I hate saying this, but did he mean, “…because of what Kentucky is….” OR “…because of what Kentucky was….”
I think we all agree certain aspects of this season were not what Kentucky basketball should be.
I do believe one day we’ll be back to the standard we’re used to, just unsure how it will happen.

Oweh is basically the only reason we competed at all.
Oweh is just a catch 22 especially in the position he’s in here. He’s not a go to guy that’s going to night in and night out make a team top 5 and head to final fours. He’s a good / really good, not a great, player. If you’re depending on Oweh to get you to a champion it’s not happening. He’s a 3rd offensive option on typical championship aspiring Kentucky teams and defensive specialist. I think he hurt the team chemistry a lot of the year. Way too much ball hog stuff, but the main point is if you’re relying on Oweh as your best player? You have no shot.

UK needs to find the off the radar Walter Clayton Jr’s of the basketball world. Florida has won three titles off players nobody really wanted to take a chance on.
This is the best value of true analytical experts. It's akin to, in quant finance, an engineer who is able to snipe anomalies in market data in real time and make the fund huge profits. These windows last seconds to minutes.

The true analytical geniuses are the ones finding the Walter Claytons. Pope's analytics is an intern level where he is copy pasting basic talking points and acting like he's doing something. Analytics aren't going to help you inside game situations.

This is exactly what most of Rafters has wanted for years. Welp, there ya go. Let's load up on KY boys and kids who've dreamed of playing for UK I guess.

Well, what BBN cares about is winning basketball games. We invest both emotionally and fiscally in this team. Let us care about the name on the front of the jersey, Mark. You go get guys that want to hang #9 for them, then we will benefit by also claiming it as our own!

Pope has got to do a little changing too, this isn’t summer camp and he’s not a counselor. If he’s going to be here another year, he’s go to change too. Right now it looks like he is going to be here. I’m not happy with it.

I feel like Pope has an identity crisis within himself. He obviously listens to the fan base too much. We hated the "it's only about the back of the jersey" program Cal was running and it feels like Pope knew that so shifted WAY too far the other way it's hurt him in recruiting. Then we all basically said last year we needed more athleticism so he ONLY went after athleticism. We meant shooting WITH athleticism i.e. a guy like Lamar Wilkerson. I think he had the right formula year one just needed a stud. Replace Oweh with a stud like Stokes or Carr with a guy like Caleb Wilson and that's damn good team. Stick to what you know Pope.

The back of the jersey comment is a total disconnect with reality. He is simply an idiot

He's doing what MB told him to do imo in regard to the name on the front vs. the name on the back. Mitch told him what he wanted him to address. He's not doing well. He's not made for this.
