Already 150 names in the portal. Coaches in the the sweet 16 have to pull double duty, preparing for their games and staying on top of portal prospects.

Edit - 171 as of the 25th.

Keep in mind.....once they're in the portal, it's probably too late. Tampering is rampant and most coaches have already been talking to these guys for most of the season already.

The NCAA has to put heavy restrictions on the transfer portal and severely punish schools that tamper with other teams' players before the portal. I personally think it's the biggest problem in college sports today, and the NCAA is just letting it happen with no consequences. I am a bit worried some teams saw Tavion's great performance last game and are contacting him right now.

Tampering has a big problem for a pretty long time too..and the NCAA has been cracking down on stupid things like showing too much leg skin while playing football

I have a different view on tampering, and it comes from the perspective of having had a daughter play college sports. Mind you, in my case, it was very low level college softball. But still, suppose my daughter had wanted to change schools … you can be damn sure that I would have wanted the opportunity to talk to other schools, and be certain that she had a landing spot, before she announced to her original school that she was leaving.

Imagine being forced to give notice to your current employer before you were allowed to apply or interview for another job. That would be insane. But that’s what the current NCAA tampering “rules” amount to.

I’ll be the first to admit that NIL and the transfer portal have had a negative impact on college sports. And I get why there are rules against “tampering.” But it’s not something I’m going to get worked up about. If it was my kid, I would absolutely want to have the opportunity to talk to other schools before declaring intentions to depart.

I can certainly understand that. It's easy to forget to look at things from all perspectives.

DeVries would have been his coach at Drake.

Garland, who hails from Arkansas, spent his freshman season at Drake, sophomore year at Longwood and junior year at San Jose State..

This will make it 4 schools in 4 years. I am sure he is on track for a degree. ;)

I feel like we have a similar view on tampering but I meant it in the sense of say kentucky telling an Iowa player that we will pay him 5 times what he's making at Iowa. I feel like that's unfair to the entire team. I like the transfer portal and I understand if the school is not a good fit, but it needs to be more restricted.

Reform of the current transfer rules would significantly alter the landscape IMO. The key is eligibility.

I’m strongly in favor of reinstating the “one transfer” rule wherein all college athletes would be allowed to transfer one time without restrictions.

I would exempt transfers to a lower NCAA division schools.

I would also completely eliminate any discretionary allowance for so-called “hardship” transfers.

Worth consideration is eligibility to transfer where the head coach is terminated, resigns, or otherwise leaves the program.

Restricting transfer eligibility would bring better stability to player movement and restore some order to the current system.
I also believe it could withstand legal challenge.

Until there's a CBA or something similar in place, the Supreme Court has made it pretty clear (given their 9-0 ruling) that anything that "restricts" a player's ability to move and make money isn't going to work. I'm totally on board with the spirit/sentiment of what you'd like to see, but there's no way any of that can happen until the university presidents get together and work out some sort of framework for a CBA for college sports.

You’re right about the CBA.

I would assume we will have some portal acquisitions this spring. There is an excellent chance that some of these new players will be from smaller schools. Several examples have been posted in this thread.

Question for the board: Are we OK with picking up guys from lower programs? I know there was a lot of hand-wringing on this topic on the football board a few weeks ago.

Personal opinion: I don’t care where a guy comes from, as long as he wants to be a Hawkeye and can help the team get better.

How’s that work for pro sports? They sign a contract so according to the ruling they should be free to move? NIL recipients sign contracts do they not? This crap is confusing.

I am sure the players getting NIL and their agents sign just one year contracts so they can get out of them and likewise the schools maybe do the same thing in case a player has a bad year they dont want to give them a 3 year NIL deal. that is what I would expect. A kid making $300K has a breakout year and a blueblood wants to give him $2 Million.

Guessing Creighton is ready to dump Owen Freeman after paying him between $1.8M and $2.0M this season.

A lot of two year agreements. Cincy is suing their QB who went to TT, for $1M.

I wouldn't mind if we took a look at a player like Azavier Robinson from Butler. He started around half of their games as a freshman and he has 3 years of eligibility left. 43% from three and 1.5 steals per game and he has a high motor. I think Ben would develop him well but I'd think it would be smart to look at players like him in the portal.

Maybe Nyk Lewis will hit the portal? I know Iowa was one of his top schools last year but I can’t recall why he chose VCU over Iowa
