I think they were recruiting the wrong kids and have adjusted this part of the game.
The Simpsons Adult GIF

these kids develop by rolling around in the room with other kids better than them or their equal.
Yep everyone at Iowa has sucked equally the previous decade+ with the exception of those two years around Covid.
Okie State and PSU coaches are not developing these kids any more than Iowa coaches. DT did not develop Jax. Cael did not develop Duke or Blaze. And watch, Raneys and Ross will be trailblazers out the gate.
Yep. Jax beat Seidel 10-9 earlier in the year and then majored him because Seidel purely regressed. No credit should go to DT. I heard Jax was still training at a local HS and commuting for classes at Oklahoma State.
it’s all in the recruiting and getting the right guys.
No one has ever won a national championship if they weren’t already a top 5 PFP guy.

Extend Brands until he dies. Nothing to see here. His guys are coming.

My opinion of top transfers ranking in recent Iowa history:
1. Desanto (none can beat the entertainment value}
2. Cali (gave us 3 years of aggressive offense)
3. Buchannan (Only 1 year but what a year champion)
4. Woods (Ripped off 1st year should have been champ, the tilts and riding were great)
5. Eiermann ( Fun to watch the crazy funk from the riddler)
6. Lugo ( Like Ferrari, just did not get taken down his senior year..........but Covid.

Im sure Im missing some but this is how Id rank our transfers. Didn't include the 1 year injured out guys.
with ADS going and Iowa winning championships it felt like the Gable years for a couple of years. I love that kid.

The portal definitely decides if they are fighting for 4th-6th again or can at least compete for 2nd or a very solid 3rd. They absolutely need a 133 and Bailey healthy at 141. 157 and 165 would be HUGE on top of that.

At 133, Crookham is a NO BRAINER, injuries or not. There is NO argument against going full out to get him if you can. That weight is now an absolute top heavy MEAT GRINDER. Fully healthy, he is the only guy out there that can at least be competitive with the 4 young'ns and maybe could even pull off a win or 2.

At 157, I want to hold out hope for Williams, but this year certainly makes that extremely difficult. Would love to see a top guy here, as long as Block can still hold 149 comfortably...

At 165, Blaze would be another no brainer.

After that, I am not even sure you need AJ at 197. Many have doubts about Ludington, but 197 is NOT a tough weight outside of Barr and, maybe, Merril. Ludington could absolutely get into that middle AA range.

How fitting would it be if they did land Blaze to fill right in for Caliendo? I couldn't think of a better guy to compliment the best transfer Iowa has brought in during the portal era...
Little and Novak aren’t super easy outs at 197.

Except you forgot the point where I said they are rolling around with other guys in the room that are equally as good as them — I believe Jax’s separation comes from rolling with Spratley, Ramirez, Vega etc.

Do you really believe that the reason for the separation was DT’s coaching ?

Of course DT is getting great recruits. But you have to absolutely blind to think he’s not unlocking something to max out their potential.

His senior year of high school, Vega lost to Seth Mendoza in the semis of Ironman who then lost in the finals to Marcus Blaze. That’s a great weight class, but a year later Vega is beating Hardy 3x, Mendez, Echemendia, going undefeated for a national title without giving up a takedown. Thare is more to that than just him practicing with Swiderski.

Vega was also the most impressive wrestler at Super 32 that year....a demon on top. They poached him for a reason from Cornell.

DT is proving to be very good at getting guys to reach potential. More data is needed but early returns look favorable.
I was very much wait and see on Taylor as a coach, but I’ve seen enough. He’s getting guys to achieve levels no one would have ever thought for 2 years in a row. Sure, Jax is one thing, but Vega, Robideau, Hamiti, Hendrickson. Clearly he’s instilling a level of belief, a confidence, and a mindset that is allowing his wrestlers to perform at the highest level. It is very Cael like, and not surprising as Cael’s protege.

He was putting college ready guys on the mat the day they hit campus at M2. It was a pretty safe bet. Add he went to OSU and had some serious backing.

Okay, when Ross and Raney’s come in and tear it up — or make sure you say Robie “unleashed” Bassett’s talent when they crush their competition.

did Brand’s unlock Buchanan’s talent?

I remember when I took a couple of wrestlers to Rob Koll at Cornell and when he was talking to all the coaches and parents he said the "funny thing is you as parents take your kids all over the place and you coaches are with them for 6 months at a time and I (coach Koll) gets all the credit.

The financial aspect is a massive part of this, and I don’t know how Iowa catches up on that front. DT isn’t flipping all these guys without a serious warchest

Oh, now I get it. Because those stud brothers that Iowa had was so long ago you can't recruit brothers anymore. That's brilliant. We certainly don't need the Raney's, Blaze's and Bassett/Miller. Guess the Bachmann's and Kenny's are out now too.

Morningstar is gonna be really pissed when you edge him out of that new Recruiting Coordinator job. 😂

No. It means it’s ancient freaking history. Totally irrelevant.

True, but it's still 83% recruiting (incl. the iron sharpens iron part) and 17% pure coaching. The key is bringing in guys whose floor is, say, 6th place. If coaching can get a guy to bump 5 places, it's a whole lot more meaningful if the start point is 6th than if 12th. Carl and now DT are mostly polishing the new BMW. Most others are trying to polish a mid-class Ford or Chevy.
