Shoot, if you had a kid playing D1 sports it would almost be child abuse to not have him enter the portal and try to get as much as he can in his short 4-5 year window.

Realistically yes. Idk what the avg $ a D1 player makes now, but imagine making say 300-500K while getting college paid for. If you get a good job after and are smart with your money, you are literally set up for life.

I know we like to be like "blah blah, loyal" and "blah blah, I would die for the team" and "blah blah are you going to quit everything in life?"

But, say you can snag 300K as a freshman. you enter the portal and get an offer of 600k at a new school or 500k to stay. +100,000

Enter again and snag 1 million or stay at get 800K +200k

Senior year you enter again and snag 1.3 million or stay for 1.2 million. +100K

**** that is an extra 400K. That is insane money.

It could! I suppose that is the fear.

With that said, MOST of the time these players have been in talks with other schools and have it all lined up, to some degree. That Tenn QB seemed to **** it up.

And to be honest I won’t be surprised if coaches don’t start communicating more because this just like lanning reaching out to Heupal. You know they hate the portal.

I’m not concerned because everyone in the country will be dealing with it to some extent. I imagine if someone does leave it will be another WR, too many on the roster to make everyone happy.

IF you can play maybe that works. That doesn’t work for the vast majority of players

My opinion is the spring portal is starting to change to where it will be for 2 types of players. The first and the most prevalent will be the guys just looking for a payday. Similar to the Tennessee QB, but hopefully handling the situation better. The second will be the guys that will be dropping a level because there won't be room for them on the roster, or they want to actually see the field. The players that are looking to make a change for further development, or players looking to move up a level, those players are going to get in the portal in December so they can go through spring ball (with or without a public scrimmage).

It will be interesting to see how the portal develops and changes over the next few years. Especially if they ever get the roster number cemented down.

I think the entire scholarship roster is at about $100K+, and also of course the full ride. Even that’s a hell of a head start on life that most will never get.

It’s not going to happen automatically like that. Each time, it’s an independent evaluation. And a gamble.

On the supply side, how many players on each tier and where does player X rate? Looking primarily at just last season. On the demand side, how many teams and high-bidding teams are needing player X’s position?

If at any point you get injured, don’t start, or can’t get game reps, then you are not getting a big pay raise. To take full advantage as you’ve laid out, you have to be both very good and somewhat lucky at the same time.

He didn’t, his agent and father did.

Better get paid now, once courts rule that former players deserve compensation for the sport they built the entire system will come crashing down. It will be quite easy to ascertain that Tommie Frazier and company were more responsible for the value of Nebraska than the current players or coach and therefore deserve a portion of the proceeds. Athletic departments won't be able to pay the thousands of college players who played for free but built the popularity of the sport, and the game will be segregated from universities.

IF you’re making 100K getting to be on a P5 team, man you’re taking a helluva risk entering the portal if you’re not absolutely sure you’re going to get a better deal.

I’d be surprised if our players even knew about the portal since we canceled the Spring Game
