Portal Strategy Question

Considering the new scholarship limit, transfer rules, NIL, do we now just need to go get the best of whoever we can get? Obviously you can't completely ignore areas of need. But not having a need today doesn't mean you won't by next portal window. Are we full on recruiting kids to positions that aren't currently open?

Note: I would sign a coaching contract today for what they get paid, but I would hate that part of the job.

I think that's always the case for us. In today's game, every position is "open". Other than having a clear cut stud starting QB - which would limit the interest you get from potential transfers - you go get the best players you can. Players can always be "processed" to make room for better talent at a position of need.

I think you have to go after your positions of need. If you don't you're going to have major holes in your team. Of course if you can sign a 4* caliber player at any position you get him. But your main focus has to be filling your biggest needs.

Blue bloods can pull this off, and in actuality, that's been a long-held but largely quiet part of their strategy. I heard Gene Stallings say it first years ago......"You go out and get the best 25 football players you can find, regardless of position, except for QB and Center". I don't know why he said Center, but he did, and anyways the point is still valid.

I think at places like MSU you have to go beyond that. We need to pick an offensive and defensive strategy, and recruit to that specifically. However, in that framework, you can still take the talent rather than a specific skill set, if it matches the strategy.

Go all in on 4* but give some money to a G5 guy to transfer during the winter portal, let him go through spring, have the understanding if we like what we see we will give more money to stay but if not, we will part ways, and you can go back into the portal.

When Jans got here he said something to the effect of you’re building a team for one year. I think that has to be the mentality in every sport now. So basically every position is a position of need.
Obviously some needs take priority based on the options you have coming back. But trying to project 2+ seasons out is going to be difficult. When a guy has tremendous success, he’s at risk of leaving for more money. I think our approach has been, and it’s smart, to let those guys walk if we feel like we can replace them for a guy on a more efficient deal.
You see that with an organization like the Braves. Sure, they’d love to have Max Fried back. But for the commitment he can command, they think they’re better off spending that money elsewhere. Yeah, State would like to have kept Kevin Coleman or Mario Craver, but we had to prioritize other positions. Like getting in a QB and some protection for him. And if a guy is not easily replaceable, we’ll pay what it takes to keep him. A guy like Isaac Smith would have had a ton of offers.

Didn't Van Buren hit the port *after* we made it clear we were trying to get Jackson Arnold to transfer to State? He may have hit the portal regardless of what we did there, but I got the impression that we were looking to upgrade the QB spot and he took offense.

ETA: Pete Nakos predicted State to get Arnold on December 9th. The next day MVB hit the portal. On Dec. 12, it was reported Luke K was scheduled to visit State. That tells me State put feelers out after the season ended and before MVB left.

You still have to have some sort of plan. Without that, and just going out and trying to buy the best you can get........is a fool's errand. Would result in chaos (which we got last year, if you remember).

Good thing you guys have it figured out. Clue Lebby in on the plan now that the experts have it. 25 four star recievers and a QB and a center every year

We needed to upgrade at QB and we did upgrade. Glad we didn't wind up with Arnold though. But it worked out about as well as we could reasonably have expected.

He was hitting portal regardless.
