For the record, this is pure speculation, I am in no way saying this occured in this situation.

Viral organic social media controvery is the cheapest media spend of all and the most effective to get a brand name out there. Worth millions, costs very little. What is it worth to have a brand seen (good, bad or otherwise) by millions? I can tell you want it costs to pay for that outright with paid advertising and it is not cheap.

1. What did the band Cold Play gain from the Kiss Cam clip?
2. What did ABC gain from the Kimmel/Trump feud?
3. What did Sydney Sweeney gain from the American Eagle ad controversy?
4. What did the undisputed heavyweight King of Controversy, Trump, gain from dozens of controversies in 2025?

So Portnoy gains fame and this kid is now a pariah...sounds great.
