Our baseball team lacked a bit on the offensive side, but according to the Huntsville Times this morning, we've signed a good hitter. While HS performance doesn't necessarily transfer to college, it's a step in the right direction.<div>
</div><div>Catcher Daniel Garner, of 6A Sparkman High School, is the "Hitter of the Year" and one of three elite players in the metro according to the Times.</div><div>
</div><div>Before his senior season he was named as preseason a All American by both Louisville Slugger and Under Armour. His senior year, his batting average was .398 with 24 runs scored, 36 RBIs, 21 doubles, 6 home runs, and an on-base average of .507. He had 21 walks and only 16 strikeouts.</div><div>
</div><div>Looks like we might have signed a good one.</div>

We get some decent hitting to go with our pitching and this team is going to be very dangerous.

And probably our best prospect from our current class in my opinion. Slauter is going to mentor him next year and hopefully he will take over as a sophomore. He will still play some next year- probably at catcher, occasionally at DH, and occasionally come off the bench as a pinch hitter. The Rays were talking to him before the draft, but he wanted to go to MSU.

He also participated in the National Power Showcase- one of the most prestigious baseball showcases for high school baseball players in the country, and he represented Alabama as the top power hitter in the state.

It was the newspaper's award and only covers Huntsville/Madison County, I think. That's a total of about 15-16 high schools.

Saw a few kids this year that had more than 6. Most weren't D1 prospects.<div>
</div><div>With that said, I trust our people to know what they're seeing. I don't care that much about HR's as much as I do pure hitting. You want a few guys that can do that, but I mostly just want people who can hit.</div><div>
</div><div>That's obvious, though.</div>

and the other team has a guy that can hit a baseball on the roof of the school- would you pitch to him?

For reference, I believe A-Rod only had 5-6 his senior year. Not saying that Garner will be another A-Rod, but you can't always go by statistics with high school baseball.

Anthony Alford hit 4 this year, and the people of Petal act like he is Babe Ruth.
