So many people posted summaries, I'll try to avoid being too redundant.
In BYU:
Really think I underestimated them.
Hill and Mangum were both spectacular.
Their OL was fantastic.
Their DL was MUCH better than I thought they'd be. The NT who got injured and the 6'8" DE are both studs who I can see playing on Sunday's.
Their WR's are much better than I anticipated.
Frustrating:
1. FG kicker. We've been so spoiled at that position it's shocking to have these kind of problems. Brown shoul be on bench next game.
2. Kondolo: Looked terrible. He should have been substituted. That's on coaching. Would like see all of Thurston, Foster and Tanner get snaps next week as I interior line yesterday looked really overmatched.
3. Tommy's clock management: If he'd properly run the clock down to 2-3 seconds left on the play clock on each snap, the come back would not have been possible.
4. Didn't like the RB rotation. Wilbon should be #1 and getting 50% of the snaps.
5. Playcalling on short yardage: Langsdorf got his lunch stolen by Bronco on these downs. Langsdorf may have thought he had top quality interior OL, but needed to recognize the BYU run blitzes earlier and adjust his calls to pop things outside. Could've burned them for a lot of yards.
6. Our supposed all conference DT's
got stoned most of the game. Not sure how much of that is just credit to how good BYU's OL is, but that is not how I envisioned that game playing out.
Positives:
1. Armstrong's arm: Thought he made some great throws. Now he just needs to pull the ball down and run more. Count to 4 and then go. The curling back into the backfield looking for long ball needs to be eliminated.
2. Wilbon: Kid is a stud who needs more touches.
3. WR Corps: They played great.
Not sure if they're all-conference in terms of speed, but that were solid.
4. Dedrick Young: Kid needs to be on the field all the time.
Bottom Line Takeaway: Some mental errors cost us the game against a very good BYU team, but I'm confident in saying that team would have run us out of stadium if Bo's crew were still in charge. So loss sucks, but there are a lot of things that feel like they're getting better. Would like a rematch after our team gels a little more in November. Seriously tough season opener.
Time to get ready for next week!
Matthew.
