I'm thinking that JF was approached after the UCLA game about negotiating a buyout, so he knows he's lost the support of the university and is now a lame duck. And that probably affected the whole team in preparation and in the game against NW. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that active negotiations are underway.

What about Dillingham at ASU?

He’s young and has rebuilt a program at a school where it’s not easy to win.

James Franklin, the obsolete coach

CJF is the ultimate CEO style coach. His path to victory is to out-talent teams, not out-gameplan. He’s always preached about recruiting and developing relationships. Dominate the state etc. in 2025, hardly any of that is relevant anymore. It’s about $$. I don’t know if there are any players who took a hometown discount cause the head coach is a nice guy.

PSU is going to have to move to a GM - head coach model, where the head coach is more involved in implementing winning gameplans. Basically an x’s and o’s coach, not a CEO. The GM can negotiate contracts and bring in the talent. PSU can no longer fail to develop QB’s and wide receivers. This needs to end. We need a coach that can scheme players open, do more with less, pull an upset now and then.

It’s just a different era now, and the things that CJF excelled at is just not as important than it used to be.

We need this thread to cover new ground. For f*ck’s sake.

I'd be open to that--he coached briefly under Lanning which I like and I think a coach in their 30s is what we should be looking at
I'm not sure how much of his success was simply tied to Skattebo plus I don't care if someone can "rebuild" a program. I want someone that can win games--they had a great gameplan for Texas last year in the playoff.
I'm not sure if he'd leave ASU (he played there) but that's a call I'd make

@Hotshoe I saw your post on the other board that Franklin is out and won’t coach at Iowa. Is that based on something you’re told or is that an opinion?

The 'buyout' is possible - $5M per year for 10 years, and Franklin cannot coach or analyze on TV for the entire 10 year term.

If Franklin has a 'coaching or TV or analysis position on any team' during the 10 year term- he forfeits an amount equal to the salary.

Wouldn't it already be announced if he was gone?
Like Oregon State made their move
But I hope hotshoe is right
The rumor is they’re negotiating terms but neither side wants him coaching from here on out. It may be a lot of speculation.

I find it really hard to believe he's going to take less than the full buyout--again, hope this is right because he needs to go
I still believe his answer yesterday about being committed to the players was him saying he won't walk away--fire me.

Why was Singleton the RB for the final drive? They had to go with Allen, but nope it was Nick. Oh, and if Nick bothers to block for Allar he doesn't get hit and hurt.

Agree - coaching (actual X’s and O’s) is more important than ever with NIL and portal leveling the rosters and disbursing talent. The HC’s who have had success as coordinators (Smart, Kiffin, DeBoer, Riley) seem to be doing well.

I’d add the coaching salary bubble needs to pop soon. Cignetti makes almost as much as Franklin ($8.3mm to Franklin’s $8.5mm).

If an email went out to all alumni soliciting funds to buy out CJF? What kind of response would there be. It would only require $50 per and just a little extra from folks like Pegula.

Why is this unrealistic? We all get these and probably contribute at least that much to our graduating major program.
I am not an alumni but I would contribute 100 dollars.

Explain.
This is a silly take.
My opinion is based on the individuals running PSU, which has become an idiocracy.... a group that is controlled by or consists of people of low intelligence. Their individual and collective desires are incongruent with selecting the most qualified person for the job.

I'm locking this thread -- CJF was relieved as coach, and the discussion has moved to other threads.
