Any word on Lion?

No idea.

It wouldn't surprise me, though, if very small Catholic schools like Leo, Hales, SFDS and St. Ben's have smaller numbers in their 9th grades than in grades 10-12. I don't know this for sure, but it makes sense to me that these schools are attractive options for kids who don't do well in other Catholic or public schools and are looking for a small school to transfer into because the larger school didn't work out for them.

Leo had one classroom on test day, less than 30...not much longer until Leo and hales are gone.

Can someone tell me why Leo wasn't allowed to explore opening a new campus in the southwest suburbs. I recall something about the archdiocese of Chicago being involved.

Can't these schools do what Mac is doing and add grades? Almost done deal that Mac will house grades 6-12..

These guys lost most of their feeders long ago, so I dont know how effective or long a junior high would stay open. Another reason might be that a certain mouthy priest from a parish down the street from Leo may not like the competition. Id probably keep them open as 6-10th grade facilities, it would be a good environment to catch some of these kids up to the academic rigor of the other CCL/ESCC schools before an eventual transfer (those certain Blue-wearing public schools would also be licking their chops). Tuition for grades 9 and 10 would only be a small increment above the SoundsK-8 rates.

I'd hope the Broncos could get kids from the area they share...

I'm not overly concerned, and I have no idea how many kids tested. This is one of those annual threads where I get the weirds reading through, because it seems a little overly stalker-ish. So I mock.

Sad. So much history at Leo. They were obviously decimated by the destruction of the neighborhood and the mass exodus of white kids, but I was hoping they could stay strong at 300 kids or so. There is no gym more intimidating when Leo has a good squad. It is basketball's version of old Cronin Stadium. Though I actually thought SR's gym at 63rd and MC's old gym were pretty close in terms of intimidation. Rice has the best gym atmosphere currently. Though it doesn't compare in terms of intimidation to Rita's gym on 63rd, MC's old gym, or Leo's gym since those were much tougher/working class neighborhoods than 99th and Pulaski. But Rice is definitely a great place to watch and blows Rita's current gym out of the water.

We know that testing numbers arent the end, be all of determining of how good a team is going to be 4 years from now. Factors such as talented kids plateauing, transfers, or a talented class the year before and the following year have down numbers but players who fill key holes,

But I feel that the numbers do tell a lot on the direction the program is headed. I kinda see it as the "40 time" of determining of what direction the program is going.

That being said I was really surprised by BR.

For Rita, Im not hitting the panic button, 203 isnt awful, but it is something I would keep my eye on for the next 3-5 years. We know with private schools all have cycles of down periods. But if the varsity continues to trend in the same direction and we see numbers fall next year to 190, to 180, then thats when we need to be concerned. We wont know for a couple more years, just something to keep an eye on.

MC's old gym was great for basketball games. New facility is top notch of course butt not the same vibe.

Montini had 1 more than Naz, and more importantly, 300 from the LGP area.

Do you know what areas specifically? Im doubting your claim, but I coach in the Catholic grade school league in that area, the SPL. We talk amongst coaches and I dont recall any St. Francis kids or schools saying that their kids were testing at Montini. And now for basketball season we just played Park and McClure and didnt hear anything like that either. it sounded pretty much like the same numbers publics majority LT, catholics half LT, 1/4 naz/fenwick and %3 iggy, Benet. They did say some girls for Montini basketball.

Im involved a lot in the LGP community and Im almost certain that 300 8th graders do not reside in LGP (I think combined Park, McClure, St. Louise, St. Cletus, St. Francis, St. Johns have around 815 8th graders combined, boys and girls)

But If you are referring to the area north of Cermak around Westchester, I know Montini does pretty decent in those areas.

As for LGP, LG, Brookfield, or Western Springs 300 sounds like a pretty big number.

Too many variables in those gross numbers. One such variable that I already explained as being applicable to Chicago Catholic schools and certain suburban Catholic schools is the CPS selective school dynamic. Another is the breakdown from one year to the next with respect to the gender of test takers at coed schools. Another is the number of those male test takers from one year to the next who plan on playing football, especially in an era when football participation overall is declining. Yet another is the percentage from one year to the next of those who plan on playing football who are also above average or impact players. See what I mean?

Using January testing numbers to determine football program direction is not as good a barometer as numbers of registered incoming freshmen and not nearly as good as numbers on opening day of the season.

McNamara tested 87 with another 15 scheduled for tomorrow. It's been around the 100 mark for many years now.

Ramblin,

I might not worry so much about the decision of parents between the Catholics and the CPS selectives. Here is an anecdote from this morning from a friend considering BR versus WY:

"At the placement exams for Catholic schools last weekend they had free coffee, free snacks, dessert table, parent seating area, it was nice. CPS selective enrollment exam this morning in Englewood, armed police outside at every corner, drop off and get out, welcome to the hood and happy new year"

Kids pick Whitney Young, Payton and Northside prep almost every time. Now if the kid only gets into Lane,Brooks or King then a lot of times they go Catholic.

King becoming a SES was pointless when Kenwood had served that function from the mid 70s to the mid 90s. Hard to get Brighton and BOTY kids to come east without the cover of the U of C. The Pendleton killing proved the skeptics right. Westinghouse and Linbloom Math are coming into that second tier.

This is anecdotal, but you might be selling Lane a bit short (and forgetting about Jones, which is now the number three selective enrollment school in Chicago, beating out Young). At my local Catholic grammar school, one mile from both DePaul and Lane, we had 10 kids from the class of 2015 go to Lane. Other schools: Northside 3, Lakeview 1, St Ignatius 3, Notre Dame for boys 2, Loyola 2, St Patrick 1, Resurrection 1, and Regina 1. DePaul 0. Of the 10 that went Catholic, at least 8 qualified for CPS selective enrollment but went Catholic instead. And those 13 that went CPS selective, virtually all would have gone Catholic in years past (and this year if they didn't get in). On the flip side, 2 of those that enrolled Catholic did so because they did not qualify for CPS selective enrollment schools.
