sorry if sourcrout. Heard Mullen had the scout team offense running Tech's bone without a football so as to have the defense defend their gaps and not look where the ball is.

Said problem defenses get into is chasing the ball and not staying in their gaps. Smart guy, that Mullen fellow.</p>

We run the option on offense so it's not like our defense hasn't seen it before and it's not like Mullen doesn't know a lot about that offense (not to mention Mark Hudspeth has coached that offense while an assistant on Paul Johnson's staff). Also, the defense we play against GA Tech won't be anything like the soft 3-3-5 we played against Auburn. We played that game terrified of Auburn's passing attack. We won't even be concerned with GA Tech's passing attack.

Why do people say stuff like that if our defense is always practicing against a practice squat that mimics the other team?

Nesbitt throws an occasional good pass, but he seems to be a lot like Relf (pretty strong arm but not very accurate most of the time). Some of the GT fans were even grumbling Saturday about how slow he got down the line on the option. When he does drop to throw, we need to be ready for that little delayed counter (or whatever you call it) that they ran with great success against UNC. I'm sure our coaching staff (unlike the previous dubmasses) have demonstrated this play to our D. So do any of you coaching geniuses (calling C34) know what you call the play I'm talking about (drop back to pass & handoff to the TB, but definitely not a normal draw play)?

Scrimmage the offense against the defense all the time. We do in early fall practice and the spring, but not during a game week.

great thinking. outside the box, and it doesnt reward a player for 17'ing up his assignment but ending up where the ball is

Not that it's a big part of our offense, but it was the first time I have seen an MSU team in anything other than the power-I in that situation since Sleepy.

I swear Croom showed up in Atlanta last year, watched the first GT play from scrimmage and said, "Wait, these guys run the option?"

That game was so miserable. It literally looked like we hadn't prepared one bit for an option offense.

but if its the play I think you are talking about, its an old Wing-T play in which the back takes the handoff in front of the QB and counters to the backside while the LB's drop as the QB drops. I'm not a Wing-T guy, but Perry made me incorporate a few of them our first year together in C'ville. This play was one of them. I think its called the Wing-T Sally or some ****- but i'm not 100%

it was like we had no idea what type of offense they were going to run. Nobody was in position. Anywhere.

they dedicated like the last 15 mins. or so of each practice that week to the option

I think we'll give up some decent yards to Tech, but there's no way in hell they should run all over us like last year.

I didn't think that could even be possible. We seriously spent a total of just a little over an hour in practice trying to get ready for GA Tech's option? Unbelievable!

But practicing without the ball to prepare for option teams isn't exactly revolutionary. I'm not sure what Croom's practice approach was last year, but coaches have been doing this for years Hope it pays off this weekend.

I seem to remember LSU doing that last year before they handed Georgia Tech that drubbing.
