When you look back at the assistant coaches we had for the past decade or so and then look at the staff we have now, it is like we are on a different planet. The present organizational structure and the personnel filling the slots prove the plan is working by the recruits we are getting. I have lost a lot of my old enthusiasm for Big Red football but I am getting "fired up".

Gotta agree that the coaches bring a ton of experience along with great contacts in all levels of football (high school, college, NFL). It is exciting to follow them recruiting. Nice to have coaches who are not only professional but also appear to be quite proud of coaching at Nebraska. I think these coaches have many of the same moral values as the great people of Nebraska. Thanks coaches for being such great representatives of Nebraska and making Husker Football exciting again.
I love our current position coaches. Still not sold on our coordinators. I found it alarming that McMullen said he had never talked to Banker since he was hired, and that Banker had no idea he was leaving.. Hopefully Banker starts building relationships with his players.
It would be interesting to know if this coaching staff, with their NFL contacts, had any influence on how high VV and MC went in the draft. I dont think many people would have thought VV would go that high. Same with Alex Lewis. I wasnt sure if he would get drafted ir not.
Agreed. Though I am far more leery of Banker than Langsdorf. I think Langs will be fine after some growing pains year one, and he is having no trouble bringing in top shelf talent at the position he coaches.
First of all, I don't think he used the word NEVER. Secondly, was Banker supposed to sit around and hold the hand of all 60 of his defensive players or just McMullen's? McMullen talked at length with Riley that's enough. It doesn't appear that Hughes was a good fit and that might have hastened the departure of VV and KW but Collins was going no matter what. Neither Banker nor Hughes had anything at all to do with McMullen leaving.
It appears this staff is on track to out recruit Callahan and Co. Something I thought may never happen again. Very impressed!
He did use the word never, his exact quote about Banker was "I have never talked to him". You see nothing concerning about a defensive coordinator never talking to one of his better players over a 16 month period? I could see if he was a walk-on scrub, but this is a guy who started every game.
I think the offense could be pretty good this year and the recruiting and coaching on the offensive side I think is good. Defense has me worried to be sure # 76 in scoring last year # 64 in total defense and we just lost 4 Dline players. On top of that banker did not recruit any juco help which was needed at the DE position. Banker gets no pass from me and has already used up any get out of jail free cards. Hughes was his recommendation, his defense must have good interior Dline play to work and he did not even speak to a player who would have started this year. Banker needs to pull his head out and step up his game or step down so Riley does not have to take the fall for him again
According to Banker he recalls instances last season when McMullen "would leave the defensive line meeting and have questions for me about something out of the meeting. We always conversed." I guess it boils down to who you believe, and since I find it very hard to believe the DC "never" talked to one of his two deep, I have to give the nod to Banker as telling the more believable story. I'm willing to give Banker some more time. He didn't have many options with DB and LBs last year. Hiring Hughes was boneheaded, but sometimes hiring decisions are 20/20 hindsight. If the defense had someone like Armstrong or Jano who appeared to be willing to give the new staff a break at the beginning, the defense might have done better and not have to had the reported come to Jesus meeting after the Purdue game. The defense seemed to play a lot better after that.
Since all these points are valid and seem correct, my guess is : In regards to football Coach Banker is correct; in regards to " soul searching " , that went with HCMR, and that in this case is enough. I'm sure the player got some " Hows it going " comments from all coaches; they aren't mind readers, this is an opportunity. I recall articles and postings of this player saying the coaches were encouraging him and asking for leadership - he was consulted on his talents and moving inside; Mr Spock wasn't called in for a consult, there were conversations - In defense of the coordinator and the player, a position coach was asked to move on.
I've got to say, I really like our coaches as well. So far, my impressions are as follows:
-Mike Riley: Exactly the right guy to put a sunny face on the program after a good, tough, but volatile and petulant Bo Pelini.
- Danny Langsdorf: Showed some questionable decisionmaking calls last year, but the guy clearly knows what he is doing and is getting settled with a new team that has traditionally never run an offense like the one he wants to run. Also, his NFL pedigree is great for landing some top quarterbacks.
- Mark Banker: I am not sold on Banker at all. Having said that, great defenses are not built overnight. This year, and the year following, are going to say a lot about whether this guy is a good coordinator or if he needs to go.
- Bruce Read: What does this guy even do again that is worth paying him more than minimum wage for?
- Trent Bray: One of, if not THE, best recruiter we have. Despite being decimated last year, the linebackers played well. This guy is a keeper.
- Mike Cavanaugh: Tough, rotund SOB. I feel like he's the kind of old school hardass that can bring the O-line back to the level of the nasty hogs of the 90's.
- Reggie Davis: Don't know much about him so far, but his coaching seems to be pretty decent. Tough to replace Ron Brown, one of the best RB coaches ever.
- John Parrella: Let's see what he can do!
- Brian Stewart: The guy can recruit, and similar to Banker, I think it's going to take a few years of his recruiting and coaching before we see the secondary improve dramatically. As it should, given the talent we're currently landing.
- Keith Williams: Doctor Wideout! This guy can recruit and play the social media game. Don't just keep him, give him a RAISE.
- Mark Philipp: We lucked out landing this guy, in my opinion. He's bringing some of the newer techniques learned on the west coast that Stanford is using, plus he's about as energetic as you can get and fully believes in Boyd Epley's basic theories. Solid.

Spot on. Though I have highly confident in JP's abilities and the DL future. This year may be rough, but it will get better under his watch.
I haven't felt this good about our coaching staff in a very long time. These guys have their nose to the grindstone and are kicking *** and taking names.
