Pretty amazing stat on our 3 point defense

He tried to sacrifice some defense this year for offense. Pretty mixed results. Looks like we sacrificed more defense than we gained offensively. But 7-8 in the strongest league in the country with 3 very winnable games remaining isn’t too bad.
Heard him say just that before the season started. We're not going to be as good defensively but we "should" be better scoring. We're really going to miss DJ, we're not a very "big team", etc. Even added something to the effect, I'm going to need to think about how I deal with that.

I asked in another thread, between his comments and the many concerns expressed on the board coming into the season and now with the benefit of hindsight, what made us think we were going to be anything more than what we are? (which is actually a pretty solid, tournament bound team with "feared flaws" that unfortunately have become more true than not)

I think a lot of people expected Hubbard to improve on last year's stats. Which was aways going to be difficult without Tolu Smith and DJ Jeffries. Instead, other than assists, he's virtually the same. Which is actually not bad, but I think people expected more.

Also, I think Cleary could have made a difference for this team.

Clary (or almost any true PG) would have helped a lot.

Kugel being consistent would have (and can still) help a lot.

Harris' 3-pt shooting being consistent would help a LOT. (You could make an argument that this is the most important one of the three going forward, to provide points and to take pressure off Josh.)

It's hard to blame Jans for all of the above. Some will say he should have seen the Clary situation coming, but I don't buy that.

Not really following that logic. Kugel and Harris are playing plenty and not really helping the defensive situation. And not sure Clary was known as a defender though he would have likely helped us offensively as a PG.

I was really speaking to the comments above mine about overall improvement and "why aren't we as good as we thought we would be"...

I see that you are trying to answer the OP, which focused on 3-pt defense. Sorry, I wasn't trying to answer that question. My answer to that would revolve around guys this year being offensive-minded players, who save their energy for the other side of the court. Unlike DJ, who by the end of his career here had transformed into an elite defense-first player. He was dedicated to popping out hard on 3-pt shooters, even if he was forced to double in the post on the same play. That takes maximum effort and willingness to play your asss off on that end... which we don't always have this year.

Shawn Jones goes all out on D. RJ gives great effort but not all the time. Cam does it (most of the time). Murph is learning to play pretty good defense. Harris gives good effort most of the time too, but not 100%. Plus he's not as long as DJ so they shoot over him as he recovers.
