I don't suppose you could point me towards somewhere I could find troop journals/memoirs from the 11th Kentucky Infantry or the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry (both Union)? I've searched through the Official Records trying to get any hints towards where exactly they may have camped in Muhlenberg County, but there's either no information or I'm not looking in the right place for it. I'd really love to find the 11th's camp because I had a great great great etc. grandfather who served with them.
543, I have a good friend that lives in South Carrollton, she knows history, I'll call her today and she if she knows anything about it

Man just let me know if you need an extra person out there to get over it! Lol

I've got a Nokta Makro Simplex and a Minelab Equinox 600. Still learning the 600, I've only had it for a couple of weeks. Pulled an 1885 Indian Head penny with it today though!
Where did you find the penny?

Where did you find the penny?
A house out here in Rosewood that was built in the 1850s. It has produced many many wheat pennies, 4 silvers, a few Buffalo nickels, a 50 cent coal company flicker from the Shearn mine, some nice relics and now my first Indian Head.

When I was younger, the local park near me had a sand volleyball court and there was a guy who brought a metal detector nearly every morning. He never found anything that I knew of so I decided to help him out. I filled my pocket with washers one evening and scattered them all over the court like grass seed. I'm a helper.

When I was first married, I would take off my wedding band when I worked on anything mechanical. I've lost two on my property 15 and 20 years ago. I would forget it on a bumper or tailgate. I leave it on all the time now.

I purchased a detector way back and it wouldn't differentiate between different metals. I have too many pull tabs, worn nuts, bolts and rusty iron buried everywhere.

I was to cheap in the past to buy a good detector. What type/model detector do I need to search just for gold?

I know within a 1/4 acre where each are located and the sentimental side of getting them back is working on me.

Dave, I am a Garrett man, I have two AT-Pro's, it has a setting that you can take another gold band and see what number comes up on my detector, then you can notch out all the other numbers and leave the number of what the detector is picking up. I am sure others do the same thing, but I like Garrett's, they are real easy to use. The ring I found had a solid 60 number pop up and I knew it just as soon as it hit!!! Be glad to help you anyway I can, wish you lived close to CC,KY I'd help you!!! the detectors are so much better now!!! Sorry didn't read it all, but it also has an iron desc on it that you can push that button and it will help tell the difference between iron and other metals, it kind of leads you between the two, if that makes sense

I don’t know of any detector that will completely differentiate gold from nickels and pull tabs; as far as I know they’ll sound similar on all detectors. The Nokta Makro Simplex or the Minelab Vanquish are sort of the cream of the crop for entry level detectors on the market right now, but if you wanted to spring for something more in the $1k area, the Minelab Equinox 800 had a dedicated gold mode.

I have a friend that did the same thing, don't know if we will ever find it. The next thing I have to try and find, is another friend lost her Tennis Bracelet 18 years ago, her husband gave it to her when their first daughter was born!

It don't completely, but what it does is helps narrow it down and kind of leads you to the coin or what ever it is

There is nothing better than finding something someone has lost!! I found a metal car one time at a friends house that his brother lost when he was about 8,his brother in now in his 70's, he cleaned it up and gave it to him as a Christmas present two years ago!!!

My mom has a metal detector that my step-dad bought for I think $600. I've always wanted to take it out somewhere and try it. It would be awkward just showing up to someone's property and asking if you can go around metal detecting. What do people usually do offer a % of stuff they find to the land owner?

I've never offered anything up front outside of letting people know I will return anything that is significant to the property/house itself or their family. The 1850s house I detect at, I've given the owners some of the relics I've found just as a thanks for letting me hit their property whenever I want. Honestly, MOST people who are okay with allowing you to detect will be interested in the things you find but won't ask for anything. If I ever have anyone following me around and expecting a cut I won't be staying at that spot for long... It takes a lot of work to get to the good stuff, and I'm not about to just hand it all over to the land owner who hasn't put in an iota of work for it, ya know?

One thing that I feel is important when asking people for permission to detect on their property is to emphasize the historical aspect of it and your interest in any relics you may find, that you will carry out any trash you dig up, and that you'll leave their yard looking just as good as when you started. Try to put their mind out of thinking that you're just trying to go strike it rich in their yard or something, because if someone gets it in their head that you're going to be digging up silver and gold coins on their property left and right (not likely) they're going to be a lot less likely to say yes.

Of course it also helps if you know the owner or have some other connection to them whether it's a mutual friend or even if you can find common ground with being a UK fan or something like that... It's harder for people to turn down someone they like [winking]

I always tell them, it's your property and I will show you what I find, if they want it I take a picture, most of the time they just tell me if you hadn't found it, it never would have been found!!!

I always tell them I will show you what I find, they usually don't care just as long as you don't leave their property in bad shape. Cut a c- shaped plug and lay it over, I carry a little pad that I put the dirt on, then I just fold the cut back in the hole, that way you don't kill the grass and it will grow back. Best thing to do is watch a video. I hope there weren't any batteries in that detector, if they were they may be busted!!!!!

He had a house there until all these damn hurricanes blew us off, idk if he’s going to rebuild his beach house. My grandparents home was wiped off 🤬
Reason I ask is I think I had a cousin that lived there in the 70's -80's, they said that he talked about the parties he threw there. Had another move back here in Ky from Many La

Yep, worked for DN for 11 years, we made det cord of all types, even made cord for the oil rigs!

When I was a kid my neighbor up the street worked as a blaster on the off shore rig crew and every 4th of July he would go get the non-el and tie in the caps and run those things all up and down street and would put one 16 rock powder load at the very end next to an old marsh pit. That’s was something I’ll never forget those exposed caps going off but when that 16 detonated it was so awesome. The cops wouldn’t say anything because he would tell them he was going to do it before hand, everybody came to watch 🍺

I’ve never taken mine outside of kentucky but I know people find silver and gold jewelry all the time on beaches... pretty tough competition on most popular destination beaches, though
Me neither 543, don't really care if I di either.
