I don't know how it could have been any sooner. Patrick received the ball took a step back and threw it. There isn't much room for sooner. Granted, it probably could have been further towards the corner, but again... the problem here is that Baker was in extremely poor position to begin with. Baker is physically pushed towards the sideline the entire play. He allows this to happen rather than establishing position. Because he is pushed towards the sideline the ball looks to be underthrown. If Baker maintains 3-5 yards from the sideline then he is the only one that can catch that ball. Instead, he lets himself get pushed right against the sideline, and what would have been a well thrown ball becomes one that a defender can make a play on. Even then, the defender had to make an outstanding play to knock the ball away, and even better for the safety to get the INT.

I'm not saying Towles is without fault. I think if you look at the previous play then you definitely see an example where he threw it too late. However, on this play, I think Towles' throw was fine. I don't like Baker there, I don't like the idea to throw it to the short side, and I don't like Baker's effort on the route, but I don't have a huge problem with the throw of Towles.

As I said that option was set up to fail because of the short corner and space. He used a regular delivery with slow release a soft pass and it all had to be much quicker to give it any chance before defenders were all over it. Only way that has any chance is catch snap and quick wrist flip.

The bigger point is Baker had no chance as defenders waiting.

^^^ I think the bigger problem was with Baker. As a wide receiver you cannot allow the defensive back to push you to the sideline on a fade route. If you do then the play is destined to fail. You must maintain 3-5 yards from the sideline, and ideally it is closer to 5. If Baker stays 3-5 yards from the sideline then the ball is thrown in a position that only Baker can get to because the ball is going to come down well over the DBs head. When he allows the DB to push him towards the sideline he gives the DB better position and makes the throw look as though it is under thrown. It wasn't under thrown. It was a poorly executed route by Baker. To look at it another way... the defensive back was actually where Baker needed to be. You move Baker to where the defensive back is and then move the DB 2 yards inside of that and the DB has a much harder play on that throw.

I also wouldn't call it late or that the defenders were waiting. Baker's defender was playing a bump coverage. So, he was with Baker the entire time. The other defender came over late and was not able to make an initial play on the ball and was a non-factor except for on the tip back in bounds. So, that wasn't anything that hurt Baker. Baker hurt the play by not playing tough and by allowing the defensive back to push him into better position. Towles gets plenty of blame on plenty of plays, but I just don't think there was anything wrong with his throw on this one, but I do agree that I don't like that being thrown to the short side.

That ball wos HORRIBLY underthrown and you want a ref to bail out Towles? Make the da*n play and quit crying about refs!
Totoally agree. Throw it where your guys catches it or non one does. Terrible pass.

Big difference between a bad call and calling the ref a cheater. At worst he missed the call. With that said I wouldn't have called that PI either. The DB had better position than the receiver did. The receiver also made no real effort to get the ball. It would have been a shame to bail the QB out of a really bad throw with a ticky tak call.

Agree. I just re-watched the play in slo-mo. A good "no call". The Vandy CB had Baker covered like a cheap suit. Not a real shove just the "hand check" you see on about 90% of pass routes. At no point was Baker open so there real option to throw it earlier. Just not enough room to work a fade route to the short corner from the 3 yard line. Whether by design or by accident it was really more of a jump ball throw than a fade.

The OOB call on the previous play was also the correct call. Every part of the foot that touches down must be in bounds. On those toe touch catches the only part of the foot that touches down is the toe, therefore, a catch.

The non-fumble call was pretty bad. Certainly looked like a catch and fumble to me.

Peace

Not saying it was pass interference, as I don't believe it was. But the only way a poor throw effects pass interference is if it is an uncatchable ball. A large portion of pass interference calls occur because the ball is under thrown. Now that is usually because the DB isn't looking for the ball and makes contact preventing the WR from coming back to the ball, which didn't happen in this instance. And the toe touch applies only when the heel is facing the field of play. When the heel is facing away from the field of play (as it was in this instance), it must come down in bounds as well. It's the equivalent of the heel coming down in bounds and the toes on the sideline with the heel is facing the field of play.

I agree with CombackCatz.

Why give stone hands Baker a 50/50 ball instead of giving Bone, with more height and a worse DB (Baker had their best) is beyond me.

This team's issue all stem from the sidelines. Stoops is a good recruiter and gets kids here, but he and his staff are out coached every game.

This throw is more on the play call than the execution.
You mean Baker, aka - American Pharoah? SMH... Way too much preseason hype for that guy... Very disappointed in his season thus far

U may call it a crap call if they made it but u could bet if UK did that they would be flags flying all over the field.
