and some solid arguments for fairness, a CalRipken(babe ruth) baseballgame that was originally cancelled in the middle of the 3rd inning of 6 total will be resmed instead of restarted after being at 14-0.

Yes, I know, I was arguing what was spelled out in the rulebook, but in this case the rulebook created an unfair advantage for the losing team. That is to restart a game they had no business restarting.

Game time limit was 1:45 and this game was 1:21 in. Only 2.5 innings completed, but you cannot explain to 9 and 10 year olds why the 14-0 lead they earned should be wiped out and remain fair minded. Cant be done. Yes you can quote rulebooks. Yes you can say that's life. But you cannot justify it.

IN the end the commissioner ruled the game should be continued due to the fact the game was stopped BEFORE the rain started and BEFORE the leading team had a chance to complete the 3rd by getting 3 outs and officially, by the rulebook, given the chance to have the game suspended.

If you have kids in any league play, address this issue preseason with the commissioner and make it a point to make sure any game that is going to be completed, be RESUMED from it's stopping point no matter what the point of the game it's stopped. Nobody was trying to be unfair. But th rule would have created that.

Good news for what it right. Bad rules need to be thrown in the trash. Immediately.

"who said life was fair?"

OJ got away with murder, 3000 people died in New York because the Middle East hates Israel, kids are born everyday with cerebal palsy, downs syndrome and other birth defects, a tornado killed a single mom in Yazoo City who was shielding her 3 sons, age 7, 2, and 1.

Its 9 year old baseball, your kids had a 14-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings I dont think they will lose if it were restarted, they are obviously vastly superior to the other team. Get a grip, teach your kids that other things in life matter a whole lot more than whether they win 35-0 or 1-0.

parents care more than the kids when it comes to youth sports is sickening. The only problem in youth sports, is the parents. Just remember that. The kids only look like they care because the are scared shitless because they see their parents flipping out and yelling at one another about a restart in 17ing 9 year olds baseball game.

if they restarted and your kids team lost? Besides you getting unnecessarily irritated by it, would you have been forced to with hold the post game coke and sandwich because they lost?

the biggest problem these days with youth sports is the whole "everyone is a winner" attitude that is prevalent in society these days. To suggest that because they are 9, they don't care about the game is naive. When you are nine, there is nothing ELSE to care about...

When I was 9, if we'd gotten beat 57-0 in a baseball game and then everyone told me that both teams won, I'd just be embarrassed for anyone who bought into that crap, and pissed that my team sucked so bad.

Seriously? When I was nine I liked getting to see all my friends and wanted to be like Rafael Palmeiro.

their own past inadequate athletic careers through their kids never cease to amaze me. My two kids have been through the youth leagues and we spent a lot of time and money traveling the South doing it. But watching parents get thrown out of games from the sidelines, cussing refs, hollering at other kids and coaches (Google Chip Pickering) and arguing over a 9 year olds game with a 14-0 score, there's a lot wrong with this picture. Only time I remember ever getting bent out of shape, I walked down the sideline and calmly told a couple of the opponents parents that what I was about to say was probably going to piss them off, but here were the facts. Our parents and several of theirs were sick of hearing their whiney **** and if they had a problem with the ref they needed to take it to him after the game, otherwise S.T.F.U! Didn't hear another peep out of them and eventually drank a cold one with them in the parking lot afterwards. Because I don't rant and rave and debate 14-0 games do I care any less about my kids, hell no. But that kind of **** doesn't teach them any good lessons in my book.

Yes, you're son's team should've got screwed and the game played completely over because that's what the rules state.

In no way, shape, or form should rules be "bent" to appease some pissed off dads... Rules are rules and if you're not ok with them, then don't play.

Little 615 will be born within a month, my first child. If any of you ever see me arguing at an official or complaining about something as stupid as this, please come over and kick my ***.

One of the other engineers here was a college pitcher. He is into his 10 year old's baseball like you would not believe. Actually had me build an interface for him to upload stats and crap. His kid is pretty good , but I recently witnessed something that bothered me.

I am going to be a good father and work with my children and teach them that they should not half-*** anything. If they are good enough to be a star, that's great. If they are a solid player, that's great. If they are a benchwarmer, that's great. The problem I have with youth sports is that many (not all) coaches only concentrate on winning, and not bettering their players. If my child sucks and deserves to sit the bench, that's fine. But if at practice, you as a coach are giving detailed instruction and such to your starters and ignoring the kids that aren't quite as good - that's a problem.

I went out to this guy's practice session the other day.

Coach works with his kid and the other starters with great detail. Works on mechanics of hitting, probably gives all starters 30 swings a piece.
After he worked with the starters, he realized he needed to work with the four kids that were sitting in the outfield pretty much watching practice the whole time.
Kid 1 comes up - five or six pitches. Good swings, says the coach - hit the outfield.
Kid 2 - five or six pitches, no contact. Good job. Keep working.
Keep in mind that every other player had gotten detailed one on one coaching.
Kid 3 - makes good contact with first pitch. Coach looks surprised. Gives him a few more pitches, and a good job.
Kid 4 - Take a couple pitches, "We're out of time."

That's what would piss me off. As a youth coach, your job is not to win games, your job is to develop these kids. All of those kids could have listened to your good coaching as far as mechanics, but you simply did not care because they aren't good players. I asked him about it - "What if one of your starters can't make it." Well, we call in players from other teams.

This is as bad as everyone getting a trophy.

Kids definitely need to learn about winning and losing.

However, petitioning the league to complete a game that is 100% meaningless where a team is up 14-0 so they can continue to beat somebody's *** is pretty ridiculous.

How about just telling the kid that the league made a mistake, and sometimes unfair things happen?

People seem to forget that the point of little league baseball isn't to get your kid a 17ing contract with the Braves. It's so the kids can learn the fundamentals of the game, learn about healthy competition, and have fun. If this had been a high school game, I can see where you can make the argument to finish the game. But it's nine year old baseball. Coach em up enough so that they can throw some people out at first and hit well enough that they get on base and get their uniform dirty.

why should they have to restart the game? Run-rule it or whatever but you are up 14-0. That's ridiculous to start over.

I didn't read the original story, but it appears the Ump stopped the game before it had reached the point of being resumed, correct? The rules say start it over, right? Then that's what should've happened.

Bending the rules for Daddy was wrong. And believe me, the commissioner didn't do it for the kids.

I'll say this to gravedigger and every other poster in this thread. Itis about more than justwinning and losing at this age. The joy of just playing the game, sweating, competing, getting dirty. Trust me on this. I am the father of a 9 year-old who played soccer, baseball, flag football, etc. at the ages of 5-8. Things were great. He loved it all. He thenspent what would have been his 8-year-old baseball season in a wheelchair. No baseball in spring and summer, no soccer in the fall, no football in the fall, no kickball on the school playground. Will he ever playsports again? I don't know. Next time you are worried about winning 14-0 or losing 14-0, just remember how much fun it is to play and compete. Gain some perspective.

Starting over means nine year old kids get to hang out and play baseball with their friends even more.

I'm operating on my opinion that it is nine year old kids playing for fun. Even though a lot of people here like to scream "pussification" when youth sports is geared more toward participation, did anyone really learn about competition, striving to win, and accepting and learning from defeat when they were NINE? No. They had fun playing baseball with friends and told the other kids on the team the cuss words their brother taught them.

should gravedigger's team be given an exception considering there is a rule in place (didn't know there was rule already until futaba pointed it out). Absolutely not. Propose to change it for next year though

If you are keeping score, all those things (competition, striving to win, and
accepting and learning from defeat) are happening. I remember losing games when I was nine but I remember a lot of trivial ****.

It doesn't have to beexplained They are 9 and 10 year old kids. They don't give a rat's assfor more than an hour or so after they leave the park.Swing by the local Dairy Queen and the attention span is shorter than that.

Nice job playing the role of "mr fairness" at the little league park. We all know you were just doing it for the kids.

If you are keeping score, all those things are happening.
When a nine year old baseball games gets rained out in the third inning, it's 14-0, the sixth batter in the line up is at the plate, the count is 2-1, and there is a runner on 1st... Not to mention keeping up with how many innings each kid has played, how many innings each pitcher has thrown (I'm assuming there are limits, high and low, to each), and which guys were in the field... blah blah blah...

What I'm getting at is that only a turd would be keeping a score sheet at a nine year old game and be able to meet back up a few days later and start the game from where it was. So, the simplest thing to do is reschedule it for a sunny day, get the kids outside, and let them play another game. I think it's in the kid's best interest to do it this way, though it's obviously not in gravedigger's.

The point wasnt about whether I'm grateful my kid wins or loses a game. They have a crappy record, but they whipped the *** of the 1st place team and everyone is getting better and better and enjoying the game which is all I care about.

The point wasnt about whether I think a 9 year old game is important. It stopped mattering to the kidsand yes, me, the moment it was completed on Wednesday night. The responses to this thread are worth responding to, however.

THE POINT....is that any sporting event is based on two opposing teams who play and the rules they play by create the necessity that one of the teams win because theyearned it on the field. It is the foundation of sport that isnt professional wrestling.

THE REASON THE POINT WAS RELEVANT at the time I posted it was that Mississippi State was CONTINUING a game vs bama in the middle of the 2nd inning and seemed to be pretty consistant, except for the score, with the situation in the game my son was playing.

I'm good with you thinking I'm some obsessed parent. Of course you couldask the umpire of the game and find out that I think he did a fantasticjob and let both of them know it even in the face of the original ruling. You could ask the coach and find out I dont care where he's played or what batting orderhe's placed in. But then you might not find theconclusion you jumped to.

It's a message board you 17up's.We discuss relevant sports issues with MSU.

It's assumed you have the 17ing ability to make the connection and rationalize that if you can also type.

ONE...dawgstudent, seemed to have gotten the point.

I ASSUMED the people like yourself had the ability to make that connection.

My assumption was the only thing more idiotic than the actual responses.

No worries. It would appear me thinking that could be accomplished by more than than one person was beyond irrational.
