NYU Medical has been tuition free to all, irrespective of financial need,, since 2018. Its undergraduate divisions are some of the most expensive schools in the country and overall financial aid sucks.

Thanks to a gift from the Vagelos family, there is considerable need-based financial aid at Physicians & Surgeons (Columbia), but in no way does it approach the generosity of NYU and Einstein. Nonetheless, it is leagues better than most med schools. Columbia undergrad is tuition free for most students from families with incomes of less than $66k, but falls short of its brethren at Harvard, Princeton, and Yale
---In 2017, Columbia Vangelos (Med.) promised to cover costs---including living expenses---for med students with financial need, generally those whose families earn under $125k. The full cost of attending is over $108k this year.
Columbia also awards need-based scholarships for students with family earnings above $125k threshold. Half of all students received scholarships this year with the awards averaging $76k. ---- WSJ 3/1/2024
---Harvard could fund many more MSTP students but puts the wood to them. That rubs me the wrong way. Candidates still fall on the sword for the Harvard brand.
Certainly! Harvard Medical School does accept MD-PhD students without MSTP (Medical Scientist Training Program) funding. In fact, approximately 40% of their MD-PhD student body consists of students who join the program after matriculating to HMS and are committed to pursuing PhD training12. If an applicant is not accepted into the MD-PhD Program initially, they may still be considered for admission to HMS. However, it’s important to note that acceptance to the MD-PhD Program requires prior acceptance to HMS in either the Pathways or Health Sciences and Technology (HST) curricula2. Additionally, for students who matriculate to Harvard Medical School without MSTP funding but decide to pursue both degrees, there is an “open tent” policy that welcomes them into the MD-PhD community, with formal matriculation upon acceptance to a Harvard or MIT graduate program13. So, while MSTP funding is highly competitive, there are pathways for students to pursue MD-PhD training even without it.

Anyone in an MD-PhD program who is paying tuition has a problem that is probably greater than the tuition.
